The Office of Sustainability and its partners are working to make UW–Madison a living model of sustainability by aligning research, education, and campus operations to advance sustainability principles on and beyond campus.Two recent publications highlight the integration of operations and academics at UW–Madison.

What's New at UW?

Discovering life in the woods... on campus
When a student in Trish O'Kane's "Sustainability From a Non-Human Perspective" class started spending hours, instead of the assigned 30 minutes daily, observing wildlife on the UW–Madison campus, it challenged even O'Kane's views of the power of nature.
Microgrids help power industry in Milwaukee
UW–Madison energy researchers are using state-of-the-art microgrid technology to revitalize Milwaukee's power industry to support Century City Business Park. City planners hope that it will bring increased economic stability to a city whose poverty rate currently approaches 30 percent.
Pasture partnership supports organic dairy farmers in Wisconsin
A new partnership between UW–Madison researchers and Organic Valley, the nation's largest organic farming cooperative, will study how to make pastures across Wisconsin and beyond as productive, nutritious and sustainable as possible.

Next Generation Transportation for a Sustainable Future
May 29, 2015 | 8:30 a.m-4:00 p.m. | Pyle Center
This summit will explore the role of transportation in a sustainable future, with roundtable discussions on land use, air quality, economic sustainability, and infrastructure management, and a keynote address by travel journalist Peter Greenberg. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
30x30 Nature Challenge
June 1-June 30, 2015
The Wisconsin Green Building Alliance challenges state residents to join the 30x30 Nature Challenge to spend 30 minutes in nature each day in June. Spending time outside can relieve stress, increase memory and creativity, and improve attention span. Sign up online as an individual or with friends.

Food For Thought

Bike tax floated as possible transportation budget measure
Bike advocates in Wisconsin are fuming at a possible state budget measure to impose a $25 tax on new bikes. The measure showed up in a May 19 Legislative Fiscal Bureau paper on the repeal of the "complete streets" program in Gov. Scott Walker's budget proposal.

Morgridge Center Badger Volunteers – Madison, WI
Registration runs May 26-June 4 for the summer session of Badger Volunteers, UW-Madison's largest student volunteer program. The volunteer sites include 23 sustainability-related opportunities.
REAP summer interns – Madison, WI
REAP Food Group is looking for development and event planning interns. Both interns will assist with event research, outreach, and administration. Application deadline is May 29.
Wisconsin Energy Institute education assistant – Madison, WI
The Wisconsin Energy Institute is seeking an undergraduate student to assist with education and outreach projects, specifically video, photo and multimedia content. Application deadline is May 29.

ENTRY LEVEL

Forest Service research ecologist – Otto, NC
This position with the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory will participate in ongoing team-oriented research focused on understanding responses of watershed ecosystems to anthropogenic and natural disturbances. Application deadline is May 30.
IPM sustainable food group team member – Madison, WI
The IPM Institute of North America is hiring a full-time project team member to improve sustainability in agriculture and communities. Responsibilities include development and operation of sustainability programs for national food companies and their supply chains. Application deadline is not listed.

PROFESSIONAL

SunPeak operations team members – Madison, WI
SunPeak is seeking a solar project manager and a senior solar technician to manage project development, construction, commissioning, and life cycle management for photovoltaic installations. Application deadlines are May 31.
Environmental scientist – Seattle, WA
Freestone Environmental Services, Inc., a multi-disciplinary consulting firm, is seeking an environmental scientist to conduct natural resource damage assessments for waste sites and support delivery of NOAA services to the public. Application deadline is May 31.

GRANTS

Enbridge Ecofootprint grant program
The grant program will provide funding to communities in North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin along the Sandpiper and Line 3 Replacement projects to help protect and restore the natural environment.
