Campus environmental contests heat up
February and March mark a series of campus challenges to improve the environmental awareness and sustainability of college campuses nationwide. Recyclemania and Campus Conservation Nationals use friendly competition and school spirit to rally participants to reduce their impact on the environment by reducing waste and energy use.

What's New at UW?

3D color printer wins innovation competition
Spectrom, an attachment for 3D printers that will allow users to incorporate seamless, on-demand color into the 3D-printing process, won both the $10,000 Schoofs Prize for Creativity and the $2,500 Tong Prototype Prize at the twentieth annual Innovation Days competition.
Office of Sustainability SIRE Awards program seeks proposals
The 2014 Sustainability Innovation in Research and Education (SIRE) Awards program includes two separate requests for proposals: SIRE Research Initiation and SIRE Educational Innovation. The 2014 focus is climate change.
Dvorak Energy Prize submissions due March 31
The contest requires a submission of an idea for a patentable technology and is open to all UW-Madison students enrolled half time or more (6+ credits) during fall semester, including graduate students who are not yet dissertators.

Contest seeks cool science images
To highlight the visual and scientific value of scientific imagery, the fourth annual Cool Science Image Contest is soliciting the best images from students and faculty and staff scientists at UW-Madison. Submission deadline is February 28.

Food For Thought

University seeks to reduce dining hall waste
College campuses across the nation waste an average of 40 percent of their food, and at UW-Madison, about 30 tons of compost are removed from dining halls each month.
PBS Lexicon of Sustainability: Local vs. Organic
What's more important, that your food is local... or organic? This video from the PBS Lexicon of Sustainability explains the distinction between local and organic food and why it is important.
How to tell sustainability stories on social media
Companies are going to have to build on the commitment they now demonstrate through dedicated sustainability communications, using the enormous marketing resources they have at their disposal to sell sustainable change through entertainment and useful information.

Main Street Green Program Coordinator - Madison, WI
Main Street Green, a program of the Wisconsin Environmental Initiative, is seeking a program coordinator to meet with businesses interested in the program, assist with registration and promote the organization through social media.
EARTH Magazine Science Writing Summer Internship
Responsibilities include pitching and writing news, trends, profiles and feature articles for print, copyediting and proofreading, art research, writing online articles and maintaining social media. Application deadline is March 7.
Young Reporters for the Environment competition
This environmental journalism competition invites students to submit original reporting - writing, photography, or video - on a topic related to the environment. Submissions due March 15.


Madison Audubon Society Art Fair: A Celebration of Art & Nature 2014
The Madison Audubon Society is accepting applications to host a booth at its upcoming art show. Application deadline is February 21.


UW System Solid Waste Research Grant Program
The program provides grants for students to research alternatives to solid waste disposal, including the reuse and recycling of materials, composting, source separation and the disposal of household hazardous waste. Applications due March 21.
National Science Foundation Sustainability Research Networks competition
The Sustainability Research Networks competition brings together multidisciplinary teams of researchers, educators, managers, policymakers and other stakeholders to conduct research to address sustainability challenges. The 2014 competition will fund research networks with a focus on urban sustainability.
