2014: A year in review
With a new year right around the corner, it is an opportunity to reflect on our accomplishments of the past year and look ahead to the opportunities of the next.

We will be on hiatus for the next two weeks. Best wishes for a safe, healthy, and sustainable holiday season and see you in 2015!

Magazine looks at nature's role in Wisconsin communities
Sustainable homes made from Wisconsin round timber, water parks at the Wisconsin Dells, and a local microbrewery that gives leftover grain to farms are a few of the many topics in the latest edition of Curb magazine, which is produced by UW–Madison journalism students.
Early adoption benefits textbook buyers and sellers
In the endless quest to save money on textbooks, sophomore Calla Born and the Associated Students of Madison have gotten closer to a solution that could earn more money for students and provide a larger supply of used books.
GreenHouse Learning Community shares harvest with campus dining hall
The GreenHouse Learning Community gave its fall harvest, which consisted of three pounds of parsley and one and a half pounds of cilantro, to Carson's Market.

Winter 2014 Commencement

UW–Madison alumnus and Coca-Cola executive Ben Deutsch will deliver the commencement address at the Winter 2014 Commencement. Any student who completed a degree in summer 2014 or will complete their degree in fall 2014 is invited to participate.

City of Madison installs bike counter on Southwest Commuter Trail
A newly installed bike counter near the intersection of Monroe and Regent Streets tracks the number of cyclists passing each day, racking up more than 44,000 hits since October 9.
Cultural support helps Native American students stay in college
Helping American Indian students keep a link to their traditions while living far away from their communities is key to increasing enrollment and retention, advocates say.

The Office of Sustainability is seeking undergraduates from any background with a passion for sustainability. Intern positions are open for summer 2015 with limited options to start in spring. Application deadline is January 14, 2015.
Sustain Dane internships and volunteering – Madison, WI
Sustain Dane is hiring interns in communication, evaluation and Sustainable Business Network outreach. The organization is also looking for a volunteer to aid in the planning and promotion of its 2015 Sustainability Sideshow. Application deadlines are January 16 for volunteers and January 23 for internships.
REAP Food Group snack program veggie processor – Madison, WI
REAP Food Group is hiring a veggie processor for its Farm to School Snack Program, which provides fresh, raw fruits and vegetables to students at 13 Madison Metropolitan School District elementary schools. Application deadline is not listed.
WisDOT summer internships – throughout WI
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is hiring summer interns in many fields, including engineering, information technology, and educational and occupational areas such as real estate, communication, environment, and policy. Application deadline is February 22, 2015.
WEGE Prize for EcoLeaders
The Wege Prize is a yearly transdisciplinary design competition that gives teams of five the chance to work collaboratively, use design thinking principles and contend for cash prizes while developing a product, service or business model that can function within and contribute to a circular economy. Registration deadline is January 11, 2015.


University of Vermont faculty positions, program director – Burlington, VT
The University of Vermont is seeking to fill three tenure-track positions under the broad theme of sustainability studies and global environmental equity. The university is also hiring an environmental program director to oversee education in environmental studies. Application deadline is January 5, 2015.
SER World Conference on Ecological Restoration call for proposals
The 6th SER World Conference on Ecological Restoration, to be held August 23-27 in Manchester, UK, is accepting proposals through January 9, 2015. Any submission regarding restoration science, policy or practice is welcome. 


Lakeshore Nature Preserve Student Engagement Grant
The Lakeshore Nature Preserve is offering a small grant (up to $1000) for undergraduates and faculty or staff working with undergraduates to facilitate the use of the 300-acre natural area as a resource for education. Application deadline is February 16, 2015.
UW System Solid Waste Research Program
The University of Wisconsin System is seeking proposals for research into alternative methods of solid waste disposal, including reusing, recycling and reducing the amount of waste generated. Proposal deadline is February 11, 2015.
Ira and Ineva Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment
The Provost’s Office is soliciting proposals from UW–Madison faculty, staff and students for new outreach, translational and community-based research and public engagement projects or new dimensions to existing activities that reinforce our public mission and help advance the Wisconsin Idea. Applications due to deans' offices by noon on January 26, 2015.
