A better "whey" to deal with Greek yogurt production waste
Consumer demand is exploding for Greek yogurt and production is up. That's great for food companies' bottom lines, but what should they do with the increasing quantities of a problematic byproduct of the Greek yogurt-making process? UW–Madison researchers are developing an approach to turn this trash into treasure.

What's New at UW?

Calling all makers, fixers and doers
The Office of Sustainability is seeking people with unique and useful skills to display their talents at an upcoming event. People who sew, make their own soap, repair zippers, or who have other DIY skills are encouraged to submit an informal application.
UW, partners to address urban food insecurity
An interdisciplinary team of UW–Madison researchers has launched a project to study ways to boost availability and consumption of healthy food in urban communities. The project will focus initially on Milwaukee, Chicago and Detroit.
Munching bugs thwart eager trees, reducing the carbon sink
A recent UW study shows that hungry, plant-eating insects may limit trees' ability to take up elevated levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, reducing forests' capacity to slow human-driven climate change.

Wisconservation Event Series
March 2015 | Dates, times and locations vary
During the month of March, the Office of Sustainability is coordinating an event series as part of its Wisconservation initiative. Events in the series cover a variety of topics related to conservation including recycling, energy use and nature appreciation. Check back regularly for opportunities to get involved in conservation on campus!

Events in the series are not necessarily sponsored by the Office of Sustainability.

Accepted items include jackets, shirts, dresses, pants, shoes, jewelry and bags. Remaining items will be donated to St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Stores. Bring your own bag to shop!

From turning waste into energy to charging consumers for the food they throw in the bin, here are five ways our attitudes about trash are set to change by 2025.
Devil's Lake State Park named national historic place
The park was nominated to be listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places last year and recently won approval by the U.S. Department of the Interior and the Wisconsin Historical Society.

River Alliance of Wisconsin aquatic invasive species program director – Madison, WI
The River Alliance of Wisconsin is hiring an aquatic invasive species program director to coordinate its statewide efforts to monitor and prevent the spread of invasive species in and among rivers. Application deadline is April 1.
Climate Solutions communications manager – Portland, OR
Climate Solutions is hiring a communications manager to coordinate strategic communications for its campaigns and conduct media outreach, among other duties. Application deadline is March 13.
Earth Day Business Sustainability Award
The Wisconsin Sustainable Business Council is accepting applications for its Earth Day Business Sustainabilty Award. The awards are designed to honor businesses for leadership in developing innovative products, processes and business models. Application deadline is April 3.


Discovery to Product (D2P) Igniter Award program
Discovery to Product (D2P) is currently accepting submissions for the next round of the D2P Igniter Award program. D2P is a partnership between UW–Madison and the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) that seeks to move technology and innovations to market. Submission deadline is March 15.
Wisconsin Energy and Sustainability Challenge
Teams of one to four students are invited to submit an original concept, which may include innovations related to energy production, storage, efficiency or sustainability. The competition includes two prizes: the Global Stewards Sustainability Prize and the Dvorak Energy Prize. All submissions are due March 23.
Wisconsin Open Education Community Fellowship – Madison, WI
The Wisconsin Education Community Fellowship will support undergraduate student projects aimed at public engagement in the student's own Wisconsin community. The fellowship is intended to be complementary to UW–Madison's Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Early application deadline is March 12 and final application deadline is March 26.
Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems graduate student mini-grant
The UW–Madison Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems invites graduate students to apply for its summer mini-grant program. Awards provide up to $2,000 for research projects. Special consideration will be given to projects focused on perennial agriculture, climate change, food systems, and local/regional food systems. Application deadline is March 30.
Holtz Center for Science and Technology Studies graduate student awards
The Holtz Center for Science and Technology Studies is accepting applications for graduate student travel awards, fellowships and Holtz Center Summer Scholars. Application deadline is April 1.
