The 2015 UW–Madison Sustainability Forum will be held Thursday, February 26, on “Forward to Zero Waste: Consume less, waste less.”

A call for presentations is now open, with particular interest in proposed presentations relating to food, clothing, personal electronics, consumption behavior and decision-making.

What's New at UW?

New master's program in energy conservation is first of its kind
A new professional master's program will launch at UW–Madison in fall 2015 and become the first in the world specifically designed to train analytically-minded students to evaluate energy efficiency and other resource conservation initiatives.
Sustainability Certificate accepting fall applications through Nov. 21
The 12-credit certificate can be added to nearly any degree program and is open to students of all class years. To be considered in the fall round of reviews, students should apply by November 21.
CALS partnership integrates indigenous knowledge into science education
A program is helping students from Oneida and Menominee communities prepare for for bioenergy and sustainability-related studies and careers through place-based and culturally-relevant science education.

REAP Food Group internships – Madison, WI
REAP Food Group is hiring a Fresh Farm Atlas intern to assist with the production of the 2015 Southern Wisconsin Fresh Farm Atlas and a Buy Fresh Buy Local intern to help with program coordination, outreach and administration for its Buy Fresh Buy Local program. Application deadline is November 15.
National Parks Service climate change internship
The National Parks Service is seeking applicants for its Young Leaders in Climate Change initiative, which provides a summer-long internship opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to conduct research, explore career options and develop leadership skills. Applications are accepted from early December 2014 through late January 2015.
Wisconsin Idea Undergraduate Fellowships – Madison, WI
Wisconsin Idea Fellowships are awarded annually to original undergraduate student projects working in collaboration with a faculty/instructional staff advisor and a community partner to solve issues identified by local or global communities. Application materials are now available, and the deadline to apply is February 13, 2015.
Wisconsin Energy and Sustainability Challenge
Teams of one to four students are invited to submit an original concept, which may include innovations related to energy production, storage, efficiency or sustainability. All submissions are due March 23, 2015.


Sitka Salmon Shares community and sustainability coordinator – Galesburg, IL
Sitka Salmon Shares is hiring a community and sustainability coordinator to work with local partners, cultivate partnerships with local/sustainable food organizations and contribute to communications about its fishermen and fisheries. Application review will begin November 15 and continue until position is filled.
Gathering Waters part-time program assistant – Madison, WI
Gathering Waters: Wisconsin's Alliance for Land Trusts is hiring a part-time program assistant to perform administrative duties, assist with drafting and distributing fundraising mailings and provide general support where needed. Application deadline is November 21.


Wisconsin Campus Compact executive director – Madison, WI
Wisconsin Campus Compact is a consortium of colleges and universities that share a commitment to the civic mission of higher education. The organization is seeking an executive director to provide leadership and assistance to member institutions to further student and institutional engagement. Application deadline is November 15.
Sitka Salmon Shares positions
Sitka Salmon Shares is hiring a director of operations to manage the day-to-day operations of multiple Midwest sites and a Wisconsin coordinator to manage efforts in Wisconsin and Minnesota, including the development of a facility in Dane County. Application review will begin November 15 and continue until positions are filled.


Sustainability Innovation in Research and Education
The Office of Sustainability is accepting proposals for its Sustainability Innovation in Research and Education (SIRE) Awards. Application deadline is December 15.
  • SIRE-RI proposals should address reducing waste of material, economic and/or human resources on the UW–Madison campus.
  • SIRE-ED proposals should fit the framework of the Sustainability Certificate and/or address sustainability-related teaching or learning tools.
Global Health Institute request for proposals
The UW–Madison Global Health Institute has several open funding opportunities to support innovative research in global health. Faculty are invited to apply for Seed Grants and Visiting Scholar Awards. Also available are student research awards for graduate students and travel awards for faculty and staff. Application deadline is January 12, 2015.
Statewide Outreach Incentive Grant Program
The Office of University Relations is accepting applications from UW–Madison faculty and staff to take outreach programming to communities outside of Dane County. Applications are accepted until funds are depleted.
