Trash and Treasure: Documenting the trash audit experience
Interns from the Office of Sustainability and WE CONSERVE have seen trash and treasure at eight of the 15 academic buildings scheduled for trash audits this summer, documenting the experience in a series of photos highlighting the trash audit process and items encountered along the way.

What's New at UW?

UW researchers create safe, resistant material to store waste
Storing toxic industrial waste is a critical but tough process that UW–Madison researchers are improving through company partnerships and a National Science Foundation grant program.
Best-ever efficiency points to clean, green gas-diesel machine
"This process is 10 percent to 15 percent more efficient than the best commercial diesel engines, which are the most efficient internal combustion engines," says UW–Madison mechanical engineering professor Rolf Reitz.

Enjoy art, music, and dance in the parking lot in front of the Goodman South Madison Library. Sample great food from local vendors and get to know your neighbors while you play and create!
Clean Lakes Festival
July 26, 2014 | Activities 9 a.m.- 9 p.m. | Law Park on Lake Monona
The Clean Lakes Festival is a highlight of lakeshore-based summer fun in Madison. The festival's purpose is to raise awareness about opportunities for recreation on the lake and highlight the importance of lakes to local life. Activities include water ski lessons, boat rides, biking and live music.

U.S. advances in fuel efficiency quiet but real
In response to the 2008 spike in oil prices, the federal government passed a series of legislative actions that strengthened emissions and efficiency standards, leading to an upward trend in fuel economy across vehicle types.
Despite drought, taps are still flowing in L.A. county
With more than 80 percent of California in an extreme drought that experts predict will still worsen, many people are receiving mixed messages and water use has actually increased in some regions of the state.

Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin Field Trip Intern – Madison, WI
The Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin is hiring a field trip assistant to help organize field trip logistics. The position will require using a database and spreadsheets, writing and editing publications, and corresponding with participants and trip leaders. Application deadline is August 15.


Farm to School Community Outreach Assistant Coordinator – Jefferson, WI
AmeriCorps is seeking a community outreach assistant coordinator to manage the activities of the Farm to School Eat Here, Eat Well task force, coordinate volunteers, and share resources among participating school districts. Application deadline is July 28.
Capital Good Fund Development Assistant – Providence, RI
Capital Good Fund is an organization that provides financial services to create pathways out of poverty. The development assistant, an AmeriCorps VISTA position, will help raise funds through grants, donations and other activities and create a robust development infrastructure.


North Lakeland Discovery Center Executive Director – Manitowish Waters, WI
The North Lakeland Discovery Center is seeking an executive director to provide leadership to its Board of Directors, staff and community and manage all aspects of the organization's operations and initiatives. Application deadline is July 23.
Green Seal Technical Consultant – Madison, WI
Green Seal is an independent, non-profit eco-labeling organization. The group is hiring an environmental scientist or engineer for technical support of programs on a consultant basis. Assignments will primarily include evaluating products in support of Green Seal's certification program.
Center for Financial Services Innovation Network Development Director – Chicago, IL
The Center for Financial Services Innovation is hiring a network development director to help the organization develop a more intentional and structured business development strategy as it transitions to a new membership structure.


Office of Sustainability SIRE-REU call for proposals
The Office of Sustainability is accepting proposals for its fall SIRE Research Experience for Undergraduates (SIRE-REU) program. SIRE-REU awards provide up to $5,000 to support engagement of an undergraduate in an existing, extramurally-funded, sustainability-oriented research grant at UW–Madison. Application deadline is August 15.
NOAA climate funding opportunities list
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration compiled a list of climate-related funding opportunities currently available, which is current as of July 8. The list includes grant programs from the National Science Foundation, Environmental Protection Agency, Federal Emergency Management Agency and more.
