Movers encouraged to donate and recycle to reduce waste and mess
As the mid-August downtown leases turn over, overflowing dumpsters and buried curbs contain many items that can be reused or recycled. UW–Madison is partnering with local non-profits to host donation and recycling sites on and near campus August 11-14.

What's New at UW?

UW–Madison's newest residence hall achieves LEED Gold
When the Division of University Housing began planning Aldo Leopold Residence Hall, it had a concept of building the most sustainable student housing on campus. Now, that vision has come to life with the announcement that Leopold, which opened in August 2013, has achieved LEED Gold certification for its design and operation.
Drilling in the dark: Biological impacts of fracking still largely unknown
As production of shale gas soars, the industry's effects on nature and wildlife remain largely unexplored, according to a study by a group of conservation biologists, including UW–Madison botany fellow Sara Souther.

Employee bus passes now on sale
UW–Madison and UW Health employee bus passes, bike cages and locker rentals, and other 2014-2015 permits are now on sale through the Transportation Services website. Current employee bus passes are valid through August 31.

The Keystone XL Pipeline: Analysis in Context of Climate Change & Public Policy

Professor Emeritus Cal DeWitt of the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies will discuss the proposed expansion of the Keystone Pipeline System that would pipe crude oil from Alberta to a refinery in Alaska, providing a "source to sink" analysis in the context of climate change, the carbon economy of the biosphere and public policy.
B-cycle Brunch Tour
August 9, 2014 | 305 North 4th Street, Madison, WI
Madison B-cycle is partnering with Madison Eats to offer a bike-to-brunch tour to four restaurants. Explore Madison's extensive bike path network and enjoy the community's unique bike-share program. The route is approximately 10 miles and will vary. The tour costs $42 for B-cycle members and $47 for non-members. Space is limited.

University of Minnesota research program combats food supply, sustainability issues
In a state home to many food companies and more than 26 million acres of farmland, the Legislature allocated $3 million to support Minnesota's Discovery, Research and InnoVation Economy, or MnDRIVE, funding 17 university projects that address food security, safety and sustainability.

Nominate a sustainability leader
Sustain Dane is seeking nominations for its 2014 Badger Bioneers to recognize people who are actively moving Madison toward a more sustainable future. Badger Bioneers will be honored at the Badger Bioneers Conference to be held at Union South on November 18. Nomination deadline extended to August 8. 
League of Conservation Voters Online Campaigner – Washington, D.C.
The League of Conservation Voters is hiring an online campaigner to assist with the organization's online program, with a focus on building, engaging and fundraising from its online activist network. Application deadline is August 8.

GRANTS

Office of Sustainability SIRE-REU call for proposals
The Office of Sustainability is accepting proposals for its fall SIRE Research Experience for Undergraduates (SIRE-REU) program. SIRE-REU awards provide up to $5,000 to support engagement of an undergraduate in an existing, extramurally-funded, sustainability-oriented research grant at UW–Madison. Application deadline is August 15.
NOAA climate funding opportunities list
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration compiled a list of climate-related funding opportunities currently available, which is current as of July 8. The list includes grant programs from the National Science Foundation, Environmental Protection Agency, Federal Emergency Management Agency and more.
