March is e-waste month
Through March, anyone can drop off electronic waste at a recycling site in Lot 50 between Mills and Charter Streets. Accepted items include anything with a power cord or batteries except refrigerators. All collected items will count toward UW–Madison’s RecycleMania standings!

What's New at UW?

UW/China urban sustainability workshop
From June 16-20, 2014, the Office of Sustainability will link academic and industry professionals at a workshop in Shanghai and Ningbo, China, on planning, designing, and creating green urban environments.
Designing cities of the future
Linking engineering, climate science, modeling, and social science, a UW–Madison proposal for a new Sustainability Research Network will re-imagine the Midwestern "rust belt" into a "green belt" of cities with adaptive urban infrastructures capable of handling future climate conditions.
Jerlando F.L. Jackson: Driven for diversity
"In my research, I'm looking for insight into what it takes to change a culture," Jackson says. "What I've found is that oftentimes, what it takes is someone willing to go it alone, because usually, when you're the first to do something, you're doing it alone."

Food For Thought

Food Recovery Network at University of Maryland donates 190,000 meals
Food Recovery Network unites students at colleges and universities to fight food waste and hunger by recovering surplus perishable food from their campuses and surrounding communities that would otherwise go to waste and donating it to people in need.
Farm bill reflects shifting American menu
Within the bill is a significant shift in the types of farmers who are now benefiting from taxpayer dollars, with traditional commodities subsidies cut by more than 30 percent over 10 years and funding for fruits, vegetables and organic programs increased by more than 50 percent over the same period.
TED Talk Tuesday: Photos of endangered cultures
Photographer Phil Borges shows rarely seen images of people from the mountains of Dharamsala, India, and the jungles of the Ecuadorean Amazon. In documenting these endangered cultures, he intends to help preserve them.

Proposals are now being accepted for three tracks in the 2014 Sustainability Innovation in Research and Education (SIRE) Awards program.
  • Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) due March 15
  • Research Initiation (RI) due March 24
  • Educational Innovation (ED) due March 24
Discovery to Product (D2P) Igniter funds
The UW–Madison community is invited to apply for Igniter funds for financial and business support for up to 10 pre-company innovations that can be commercial-ready (company start or licensed) by May 31, 2015. Application deadlines for initial rounds are March 20, April 20, and May 20.
