First Sustainability Lunch HOUR draws variety of student sustainability research projects
Sustainable electricity production, local food vending and carbonating beverages were the sustainability research topics presented to an audience of more than 25 students, faculty and staff at the first-ever Sustainability Lunch HOUR (Highlight of Undergraduate Research) last month.

What's New at UW?

Reducing energy consumption, one chip at a time
Building on work supported by an Office of Sustainability Sustainability Innovation and Research Education (SIRE) grant, UW–Madison mechanical engineering professor Timothy Shedd has created a refrigerant-based system for cooling computers that significantly reduces energy consumption. He is commercializing the work through a new startup company, Ebullient.
Badger Volunteers work with 1000 Friends of Wisconsin to examine the pedestrian world, one block at a time
The volunteers walk up and down every street in downtown Madison performing a walkability survey, taking notes on where there are blind corners, unsafe sidewalks, poorly designed intersections and other impediments to pedestrian friendliness.
Wisconsin Energy Institute hailed as exemplary cross-disciplinary collaborative space
The building design, layout, and project delivery model of the 102,000 square foot research facility are credited with promoting function, flexibility, and collaboration to drive clean-energy research.

Reid Bryson Scholarship
The Center for Climatic Research of the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies is offering the fourth annual Reid Bryson Scholarship for exemplary undergraduate and graduate student research on fundamental climate and meteorological processes or topics that connect climate, people and the environment.

Applicants should email the title of their project to Dr. Steve Vavrus by April 11 and prepare a poster to present at the Nelson Institute Earth Day Conference April 22.
Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy - Chicago, IL
From August 6-20, students and professionals can pursue a broad spectrum of energy and sustainability topics at this intensive workshop and lecture series at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Applications will be accepted until July 1.

Lakeshore Nature Preserve volunteers - Madison, WI
Volunteers are needed to help care for the natural areas on the UW–Madison campus. Activities include woody invasive plant removal, planting and seeding, seed collecting, maintaining trails, and cleaning firepits. Tools and training provided.
Smart Gardener organic garden managers - Chicago, IL
Smart Gardener is a multi-sided technology platform that connects inexperienced fresh food enthusiasts with landscaping professionals that posses the expertise and resources to plan, build, manage and maintain organic food gardens.

Patel College of Global Sustainability, University of South Florida - Tampa, FL
A new interdisciplinary college focused on urban sustainability is searching for Assistant Professors in Infrastructure Planning for Urban Resource Management and in Integrated Systems Analysis and Sustainability and two Research Assistant Professors. Applications should be received by April 4.

GRANTS

Holtz Center for Science and Technology Studies Outreach Fellowship
This $5,000 fellowship is awarded to a faculty or academic staff member who proposes an innovative way to engage the broader community in matters of science and technology that have general social and political importance. Application deadline is April 25.
Educational Innovation Mini-Grants
Educational Innovation Mini-Grants, up to $1,000 each, are available to support faculty and staff as they initially explore ideas and efforts to advance teaching and learning innovations. Applications due by June 1.
