What's New at UW?

Call for Abstracts: Urban Sustainability
The China Sustainability Workshop is now accepting presentation abstracts from businesses, researchers, and others to share information, innovation, and technology at the June 16-20 event in Shanghai and Ningbo. Submissions are welcomed in the following tracks:
    •        energy
    •        water
    •        materials
    •        planning and design
    •        infrastructure
    •        other aspects of sustainability
Submissions open until April 25.
Global Health Symposium links animal, human and environmental health
"One Health: Making the Connections," begins at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, in the Health Sciences Learning Center. Students, faculty and staff members will participate in panel discussions and present work on an array of medical, policy and environmental factors that influence health and illness.
UW–Madison teams advance to next round of Agricultural Innovation Prize competition
Four teams of UW–Madison students - Drsti, Mighty Mealworm, Monitag, and W2E Slurry Services - will compete at the finals April 25-26 at the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery. View the remaining teams and vote for your favorite though April 24!

U.S. Secretary of State calls climate inaction 'catastrophic' 
In response to the most recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said the costs of inaction on climate change will be "catastrophic." The report described the impacts of global warming as "severe, pervasive and irreversible."

Carbon dioxide emissions have ticked up by 105 percent since the early 1970s, or about 2 percent a year, according to date from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, an international coalition of 34 countries.
The world's growing love affair with the most wasteful form of coffee
Sales of single-serve coffee - the kind first popularized in the U.S. by Keurig, and widely known as K-cups - have more than tripled since 2011, MarketWatch reported in November.

Clean Wisconsin Foundations and Grants Manager 
The Foundations and Grants Manager supports Clean Wisconsin's environmental programming and is part of a 3-person development department, which raises approximately $2 million annually from foundation, individual and government resources to support clean air, water and energy program work.

Holtz Center for Science and Technology Studies Outreach Fellowship
This $5,000 fellowship is awarded to a faculty or academic staff member who proposes an innovative way to engage the broader community in matters of science and technology that have general social and political importance. Application deadline is April 25.
Educational Innovation Mini-Grants
Educational Innovation Mini-Grants, up to $1,000 each, are available to support faculty and staff as they initially explore ideas and efforts to advance teaching and learning innovations. Applications due by June 1.
