A year after it was first approved, the $80,000 Green Fund – a first for UW–Madison – has not yet been distributed due to issues surrounding appropriate use guidelines for segregated fees.

Scientists get to the heart of fool's gold as a solar material
UW–Madison scientists made a discovery that suggests how improvements in iron pyrite – a cheap compound that makes a common mineral known as fool's gold – could lead to inexpensive yet efficient solar cells.
Campus Food Pantry to cater to 'invisible' student population
The Associated Students of Madison recently approved the allocation of student funding to launch a food pantry on campus to serve the needs of UW–Madison students who are uncertain where they will find their next meal.
Reminder: SIRE Award application deadline Dec. 15
Proposals for research and education grants are sought, with preference given to projects addressing waste reduction on campus and courses for the sustainability certificate.

UW–River Falls is seeking a campus sustainability coordinator to manage a campus-wide sustainability program, including projects in sustainability operations and outreach programming. Application deadline is December 12.
Great Lakes Commission director of information strategy – Ann Arbor, MI
The Great Lakes Commission is seeking a director of information strategy to lead the development and implementation of a plan to convert data on Great Lakes economy and environment into accessible information. Application deadline is December 12.


Sustainability Innovation in Research and Education
The Office of Sustainability is accepting proposals for its Sustainability Innovation in Research and Education (SIRE) Awards. Application deadline is December 15.
  • SIRE-RI proposals should address reducing waste of material, economic and/or human resources on the UW–Madison campus.
  • SIRE-ED proposals should fit the framework of the Sustainability Certificate and/or address sustainability-related teaching or learning tools.
Wisconsin Energy and Sustainability Challenge
Teams of one to four students are invited to submit an original concept, which may include innovations related to energy production, storage, efficiency or sustainability. All submissions are due March 23, 2015.
Global Health Institute request for proposals
The UW–Madison Global Health Institute has several open funding opportunities to support innovative research in global health. Faculty are invited to apply for Seed Grants and Visiting Scholar Awards. Also available are student research awards for graduate students and travel awards for faculty and staff. Application deadline is January 12, 2015.
Statewide Outreach Incentive Grant Program
The Office of University Relations is accepting applications from UW–Madison faculty and staff to take outreach programming to communities outside of Dane County. Applications are accepted until funds are depleted.
