What's New at UW?

No one-size-fits-all approach with changing climate, changing land
Researchers at UW–Madison and Aarhus University in Denmark describe the first way to determine the combined potential impacts of climate change and land-use change on plants, animals and ecosystems.
Grants fund technology products on the road to commercialization
An exercise machine that helps stroke victims walk, a cheaper, more beautiful LED light bulb and a game to teach meditation are among the innovations funded in the first round of UW–Madison's Discovery to Product, or D2P, program.
Turning bottles into blooms
WE CONSERVE has been inspiring UW–Madison students and faculty to reduce waste since 2006, but this summer, the organization spread its message of environmental stewardship to the Madison community with bottle blossoms.

Bike the Barns
September 14, 2014 | Fireman's Park, Columbus, WI

UW–Madison's WE CONSERVE will assist with waste management and recycling during the event.

Food For Thought

The art of eating old stuff
If we could claw back from the garbage food that gets discarded too early, we could increase the amount of nutrition available for the world's growing population, while honoring the effort of farmers and food processors whose hard work we are about to toss.
Wisconsin supports new energy technology hub
A new Energy Innovation Center, to be built beginning in September on Milwaukee's north side, will include an incubator and laboratory for developing energy and power technologies that could help some of Wisconsin's largest businesses grow. It will bbe adjacent to the Mid-West Energy Research Consortium, a public-private energy collaborative involving area companies and engineering schools including UW–Madison.
Easy on the environment, but not necessarily neighbors' eyes
Architect Thomas Paino bought a rowhouse in Long Island City, NY and remodeled it with the latest in sustainable design features, but his neighbors were less than pleased by the cloud-inspired tile work on the home's exterior.
