Climate Quest Finale set for January 30
The final teams will present prototypes of their proposed climate solutions to an investor panel to compete for the grand prize.

The event, to be held at UW–Madison's Fluno Center, will be free and open to the public; however, space is limited and early registration is encouraged.

UW researcher receives award for Styrofoam reuse and recycling program
UW–Madison postdoctoral fellow Andrew Markley received an environmental stewardship award for his work to establish a Styrofoam reuse and recycling program on campus, which was funded by a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency.
Budget in Brief offers a transparent look at UW–Madison's budget
The 20-page budget briefing document uses a mix of words, graphics and charts to illustrate the university's revenue sources and how they are distributed. Chancellor Rebecca Blank expects it to become an annual publication.
Social media for social good
UW–Madison researchers analyzed posts on China's most popular social media outlet to uncover real-time information about air pollution levels in Chinese cities, which can be important for people who are sensitive to air quality.

DIY Science: Trash Auditing 101

What can you learn from trash? A lot! At this DIY event, you'll have a chance to roll up your sleeves, don some gloves and slice open a bag to see what you can learn from a trash audit. Guided by Nelson Institute professor Cathy Middlecamp, participants will explore sustainability and find new ways to encourage people to reduce, reuse and recycle.

US and China strike historic deal on carbon cuts
The United States and China unveiled last week a secretly negotiated deal to reduce their greenhouse gas output, with China agreeing to cap its emissions for the first time and the United States committing to significant reductions by 2025.
To end food waste, changes must begin at home
This Thanksgiving, plan to enjoy - not toss - your leftovers. Food is the largest single source of waste in the U.S. and half of food headed to the landfill comes from homes.
Living wages served up in Denmark
Living wages, a rarity for U.S. fast-food workers, provide sufficient income for fast-food workers in Denmark to pay rent and bills, with money left over to go out to dinner or to a movie. Could this model work in the United States?

Center for Culture, History, and the Environment Graduate Student Symposium – Madison, WI
The Center for Culture, History, and the Environment is seeking proposals to present work related to environmental and cultural change throughout history at its annual Graduate Student Symposium. Application deadline is November 28.

Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District pollution prevention specialist – Madison, WI
The Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District is hiring a pollution prevention specialist to help execute the district's pollution prevention and resource reduction initiatives as well as assist in the management of a variety of other activities including permitting, waste approvals and education activities. Sustainability Innovation in Research and Education
The Office of Sustainability is accepting proposals for its Sustainability Innovation in Research and Education (SIRE) Awards. Application deadline is December 15.
  • SIRE-RI proposals should address reducing waste of material, economic and/or human resources on the UW–Madison campus.
  • SIRE-ED proposals should fit the framework of the Sustainability Certificate and/or address sustainability-related teaching or learning tools.
Wisconsin Energy and Sustainability Challenge
Teams of one to four students are invited to submit an original concept, which may include innovations related to energy production, storage, efficiency or sustainability. All submissions are due March 23, 2015.
Global Health Institute request for proposals
The UW–Madison Global Health Institute has several open funding opportunities to support innovative research in global health. Faculty are invited to apply for Seed Grants and Visiting Scholar Awards. Also available are student research awards for graduate students and travel awards for faculty and staff. Application deadline is January 12, 2015.
Statewide Outreach Incentive Grant Program
The Office of University Relations is accepting applications from UW–Madison faculty and staff to take outreach programming to communities outside of Dane County. Applications are accepted until funds are depleted.
