For Readers & Writers

from Susan Dennard

June 27, 2014
Sorry for the little break, guys! My wrists are feeling better, so that's good. Plus, I started watching The Mindy Project, and I AM OBSESSED. I can't believe I waited so long to give that show a try.

Best of all, the time away from the internet has been GREAT for my writing mojo. More on that below. ;)

We are down to our FINAL #YARunsA5K prizes! Today, we have a 5-page critique from Suzie Townsend and a 10-minute phone call with Joanna Volpe. You can bid $1, and those things might be yours.

Seriously, though, no one has bid on the latest critiques, and we only have 1 week left! SO you could throw down $1 and possibly get critiques from Kathleen Ortiz, Danielle Barthel, Jaida Temperly, and me!

For the Misfits:
Paperback Release + Truthwitch Map
I have another Twitter giveaway running until 2 PM ET. Just retweet this tweet to win! WOOHOO! Can you believe the book comes out in only 25 days?!

In other news, the paperback for A Darkness Strange & Lovely released on Tuesday! You can buy it from all the major vendors:

And, while I'm still talking about the Something Strange & Deadly series, I wanted to let y'all know about an event I'll be doing next month in Grand Rapids, Michigan!

Stay tuned for more events--I have a whole slew of them coming for early September. ;)

Last, but certainly not least, I JUST GOT MY MAP FOR TRUTHWITCH! It is glorious, guys! I doubt I'm allowed to share the whole thing yet, but I wanted to give y'all a sneak peek (it's just too beautiful not to share).

P.S. If you come to my events this September (dates & locations to be announced soon), I'll have POSTERS of the map to give away!

For the Daydreamers:
Rituals = Magic Pixie Dust
So y'all know from my last newsletter that I was having some trouble with my current project. Frustration was running HIGH-HIGH-HIGH.

Part of the problem was that I had way too much on my plate. I am horrible at saying "no", and during the months of April and May, I said "yes-yes-yes" to way to many things. It was weighing me down.

Two weeks ago, when my wrists finally gave out, I had no choice but to take some time away from the internet. Thank GOODNESS I did. For these past two weeks, I have written pretty much only by hand...

And it. Has been. INCREDIBLE.

I've talked about the power of ritual extensively on my blog, and so many of you know that one of my rituals is "writing by hand in a spiral-bound notebook." Well, when I fully tapped into that ritual by eliminating all outside distractions, it was like striking oil.

The ideas exploded, and suddenly all the plot holes and character ambiguity that I'd been facing for 1.5 months just VANISHED. Everything tumbled out and then finally clicked. I saw my story, I understood my protagonist, and I finally felt that surge of JOY that tells me I've found the Right Story to tell.

So, even though I was already pretty convinced of the power of ritual, I am now a HUGE BELIEVER that Writing Rituals = Magic Pixie Dust for my Muse. If I ever find myself pulling out my hair and crying in a corner again, I will take time away from the computer to work only by hand.

And if you all haven't yet found your rituals, I urge you to look for them! Or create them! Then, when you find your own Muse doesn't want to cooperate, you can fall 100% into your ritual and watch the story unfold.

Now, to wrap up the week, here are the best writing-related links I discovered in the past 2 weeks:
See you next week, my friends! And don't forget: if you have any questions about ANYTHING, drop by the forum to ask. Thanks for reading!
