Back Injalak & Stay Connected

Injalak Arts along with all remote communities in the Northern Territory are closed to all non-essential travel in response to concerns about the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). Arnhem Land and Kakadu National Park has been placed within a special bio security zone to protect our artists and the wider community. Sadly this means we do not anticipate welcoming any visitors for the foreseeable future.
Your support is vital in this difficult time. We will continue our online presence to keep sharing our stories & culture. We've been uploading more digital content direct from the artists.

Let's stay connected.

Injalak Curates

Whilst lockdown prevents visitors to the art centre or galleries we have launched Injalak Curates.
For the inaugural online exhibition we want to share a glimpse of Co-founder and Manager Gabriel Maralngurra and his elaborate painting techniques. Gabriel has curated a special online collection of his paintings inspired by rock art on Injalak Hill.

Gabriel Maralngurra – Rock Art Style

I want people to feel the spirits and the elders who were doing those styles when they look at my paintings. I want them to feel and touch how it was done, to see the past continuing in the present.” — Gabriel Maralngurra

Our talented artists make artworks year round in remote Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory inspired by their culture and local environment. All items offered for sale are made in Gunbalanya and the homelands. All arts and crafts sold through this store will include a Certificate of Authenticity. We are delighted to be able to share them with you as they become available and update stock regularly. Injalak Arts is owned by the artist members and all proceeds go to our Aborginal Corporation, a registered charity. Buying from us is sustaining our members and encourages them to continue making beautiful artworks!

Fibre Art

Close up of a woven Marebu mat featuring numerous 100% organic locally sourced dyes.
Weavers preparing the Pandanus palm leaves.

As part of our Back Injalak campaign we've been sharing videos showing all the hard work and skill that goes in to making each unique fibre art. Weavers gather fresh young leaves from the Pandanus palm using a hooked stick, then strip and dry them. The pandanus is then boiled up on the campfire with local plant dyes.

See how weavers dye purple and yellow.

We've been busy uploading lots of beautiful new fibre art including Marebu (woven mats), Animal sculptures, baskets and earrings. Feel free to contact us for more info.
