Nungalinya eNews - November 2016

Graduation Time

Dear <<First Name>>

The end of the academic year is always a wonderful time of celebrating the students' achievements as they graduate. We have already had the Certificate III in Christian Ministry and Theology graduations, one of the Certificate II in Media and Discipleship graduations, and the Certificate II in Music graduation. We still have 3 to go!
  •  4th November Certificate IV in Christian Ministry and Theology
  • 10th November Certificate I Foundation Studies
  • 11th November Certificate II Media and Discipleship
While there are only two weeks of classes to go, November is still a busy time. We send teachers to visit many of the remote communities our students come from in order to meet with church leaders and get applications for next year. We hold review days for the whole staff and also for the teachers and deans. Lastly we have our final Board Meeting for the year, where the big decision is the approval of the budget for the following year.

Please continue to pray for us, for energy, enthusiasm, good health, and most of all that we keep focused on Christ as the centre of all we do.

Prayer Points

If you are short on time:

  • Continue to pray for the funding application to the Aboriginal Benefits Account for an upgrade to the College accommodation.
  • Pray for Helen Richmond as she spends 4 weeks in a remote community developing language and cultural understanding.
  • Pray for staff going on community visits that the weather will allow access and they key meet the key church leaders in communities and identify the right students for next year.
If you have a bit longer:
  • Pray for the Staff Review Day (24/11)  and Teachers and Deans Review day (28/11) as we look back over the year and also plan for the future.
  • Pray for safety in remote communities and in Darwin as cyclone season approaches
  • Continue to pray for the certification of the College buildings that it will be complete before cyclone season
Pass it on!

From the Bible

Genesis 1:3

NIV : God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.

Kriol: Brom deya God bin tok, “Lait!” En streidawei det lait bin kamat.

Helen Richmond
One of the major challenges for teachers at Nungalinya is to understand the different languages and cultures of our students. To help teachers grow in their cultural understanding, we seek to give opportunities for extended immersion visits to communities. Helen Richmond, one of our Certificate III and IV teachers is currently staying in the remote community of Ramingining for 4 weeks. This will be a great opportunity for her to continue to develop her Yolngu Matha language skills (she has been studying for a couple of years at Charles Darwin University) and sit with community members and church leaders and learn from them. Please pray for safety and good learning while she is away, and also for her husband who is staying behind in Darwin.
Certification of Buildings
Thanks for your prayers for this important issue at the College. We are making progress! Sadly, I think both Neil and I are still scratching our heads!

The great news is that we have been informed by the NT Building Branch that any buildings from before 1 June 1984 do not require certification, although they must be safe and meet fire regulations. This is a wonderful outcome and means that some buildings we thought we would need to stop using can remain in use as long as they are well maintained.

So now we only have 2 more Certificates to get - for our Admin
Building and for the newer part of the student hostel. Please pray that this might be finished before the end of the year.
