Nungalinya eNews - July 2016

Reflecting on a fantastic semester

Dear <<First Name>>

We have come to the end of our first semester for 2016. 254 students in 5 courses have attended the College so far. Many of these will return for a second intensive in semester 2, and we will also welcome new students in our Foundation Studies course during Term 3.

There have been many highlights. In Term 1 we were really encouraged by our Certificate IV Christian Ministry and Theology students and the Christian maturity they displayed that really enhanced the whole feel of the college community. We also enjoyed our Certificate II in Music students. Even though it is a small class, they are dedicated to learning and have great gifts in music. Through Term 2 we welcomed our Certificate III in Christian Ministry and Theology students. For both Certificate III and IV students we have had good feedback about our new courses, and in particular the reduction in assessment. This means there is more time for learning in culturally appropriate ways. Once again our Certificate II In Media and Discipleship students have blessed us with 2 films interviewing Assistant Teachers - Mandy Mangurra and Maratja Dhamarrandji.

However, it has also been a very challenging semester and we have felt quite short staffed. As we come to semester 2 and staff return from leave and our new weekend hosts commence we are hopeful that some of the pressure will ease.

The staff have all worked incredibly hard this semester and many are now going on some well earned leave. Please pray that they might be refreshed, encouraged, and ready for a new semester with all its blessings and challenges.
New Films by the Media Class

Check out these new films.
Mandy Mangurra - God is Speaking to Me
Maratja Dhammarrandji - Restoration

The films are interviews with Indigenous Assistant Teachers  filmed on professional equipment during the intensive. They are then edited as a class, and shown to the College community on the final Friday of the intensive.

Prayer Points

If you are short on time:

  • Pray for the certification process and that all our buildings will be found structurally sound enough to keep.
  • Give thanks for our new weekend hosts, Heather and Craig Kelly and pray for them as they move onto campus and settle into their new role.
  • Give thanks for our Indigenous Assistant Teachers - Yurranydjil, Maratja, Wangarr, Mandy, Marlene and James, and pray for them as they continue to develop their teaching.
If you have a bit longer:
  • Pray for Felicity Amery returning from personal leave and taking up the role of Uniting Church Dean again.
  • Pray for the current  review of our Northern Territory Funding for Foundation Studies and that we will continue to be funded for 2017.
  • Pray for Indigenous Christian leaders to continue to grow in their faith and be role models for their churches and communities.

Update on Property

Thanks to those who have been praying about the need for us to obtain proper certification for our buildings.  We submitted our application to the assessors several months ago. Unfortunately,  the NT government have now changed the regulations! Sadly, this seems to be the case every time we think we are ready. However, this may be a good thing. There will now be 3 levels of certification reflecting whether buildings are new or old. We had been attempting to get all our buildings to meet the current requirements and this was proving very difficult. That will no longer be necessary, but we will need a structural engineer to review all the buildings for safety and to determine whether they meet the standards of the time in which they were built. Hopefully we will be able to have this finalised in the next 6 months as it has been a major issue for several years now.
