Nungalinya eNews - January 2016

A New Name For A New Year

Dear Phillip

Happy New Year to all our faithful supporters. We hope this year will be full of joy for you.

Thank you for praying about the transition for Nungalinya to move from an Incorporated Association to an Indigenous Corporation registered with ORIC (Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations). This was required by the Federal Government in order to keep receiving our current funding. However, it is largely an administrative change.

We have been able to keep much the same constitution and governance structures and certainly our purposes as a College have not changed. We still have representatives of each of the three churches on the board, although the number has reduced from 4 to 3 for each denomination.

Our governance has also been strengthened by adding some advisors in the areas of finance, law and education. Lastly we have an Indigenous Chairperson appointed by the three partner denominations. The new Chairperson is Mr Maratja Dhamarrandji. See below.
Introducing our new Chairman

Mr Maratja Dhamarrandji needs little introduction as he has been a student at Nungalinya for many years.
He is not only a graduate of the Certificate III in Theology course but has returned to do the Certificate IV course.

Maratja is also an ordination candidate in the Uniting Church's Northern Synod and currently works as the Support Worker for the East Arnhem Ministry Area Council.

Prayer Points

If you are short on time:

  • Give thanks that the College's change to an Indigenous Corporation has been completed.
  • Please pray that all our staffing needs for next year will be met as we are having difficulty finding suitable applicants and time is running out.  Give thanks for the new staff who are joining the team.
  • Give thanks to God that we had a better than expected end of year financial result. The exact details were not available at time of publication but will be made known as soon as possible.
If you have a bit longer:
  • Please pray that students and teachers will be refreshed over the holiday break and return safely to college for the new academic year.
  • Please pray for our Principal, Jude Long, as she prepares to speak at the CMS Summer Conferences in Victoria and Tasmania during January 2016.
  • During January, some staff will be attending CMS Summer Conferences across Australia which will focus on Indigenous ministry. See sidebar on right.

Gurrumul's Gospel Album

We don't usually do advertisements but we would like to offer this endorsement for Gurrumul's latest album of Gospel songs.

Music has been a significant component of worship for the indigenous church and it is always a joy to see faith being expressed in the languages of the people.

Nungalinya College runs a Music course for that very reason: To see indigenous people trained up not only in the practicalities of music production but in communicating God's Word in song.

We strongly endorse Gurrumul's Gospel album and encourage you to purchase a copy from your local music retailer.

Click on the picture to view the official video of Gurrumul's 'Jesu' which was partly filmed in the church at Elcho Island. You may even see some of our students and teachers in it.

From the Bible

John 1:1

New International Version (NIV)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

CMS Summer Schools

The Church Missionary Society (CMS) runs Summer Conferences in each state every January. In 2016 the conferences will feature updates on the Northern Territory by Bishop Greg Anderson, Anglican Bishop of the NT.

Dr Jude Long will also speak at the Victorian conference supporting Bishop Greg and will be the keynote speaker at the Tasmanian conference.

Various Nungalinya staff will also be present at the CMS Summer Conferences in their home state.

This is a great opportunity to hear first-hand about what God is doing in North Australia and to meet the Principal and staff.

You can view a video of Greg Anderson HERE and then visit the CMS website for registration details.
