EUROSITE AT COP26: A MESSAGE FROM GLASGOW
The very first Peatland Pavilion ever, held at the Climate Summit COP26 in Glasgow, was a success! Worldwide, the attention for the potential contribution of peatlands to fighting climate change is growing, from the far north to the southern hemisphere. Eurosite supported the organisation of two well-attended on-site events at the COP26: the Interreg Care-Peat event with the Peatland Restoration Management Group on 5 November 2021, and ‘Dialogues towards a European Peatlands Initiative’ hosted by the Irish Government on 12 November 2021, the final day of COP 26.

Natural Climate Buffers in Ireland - Natural Climate Buffers Study Tour 2021
NATURAL CLIMATE BUFFERS IN IRELAND 2021
From 27-29 September, 19 international participants and 58 Irish stakeholders participated in the Eurosite Natural Climate Buffers Study Tour through Ireland, during which they learned about four Irish natural climate buffer areas and nature-based solutions to climate change adaptation in Ireland. The event was an initiative of our Wetlands and Climate Change Working group, hosted by the Community Wetlands Forum and supported by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage of the Government of Ireland, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

PEATLANDS MUST BE WET!
To promote the essential rewetting of peatlands, we created a joint campaign with the Global Peatland Initiative: Peatlands must be wet! Several people have already promoted this claim on social media. We warmly invite you and your organisation to take part in the social media campaign.

MEASURING GREENHOUSE GASES IN NATURAL CLIMATE BUFFER AREAS
In peatlands such as the Polder Camphuis, fen plant residues remain in the soil, creating a peat layer that consists mainly of carbon compounds. Rewetting the peatland reduces these emissions and stimulates fen and marshland vegetation: more plants grow and they absorb and capture CO2 from the air. Simultaneously, this rewetting can also cause extra emissions of the strong greenhouse gas methane. It is not yet known how large these effects are and under what circumstances they occur. Eurosite member Natuurmonumenten hopes to discover the answer to these questions by taking measurements together with researchers from WUR.

COASTAL ADAPTATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE
On 8 June 2021, on the occasion of the World Ocean Day, the Conservatoire du littoral and the Ocean Climate Platform organised a workshop gathering 32 participants from 9 countries. These representatives from European “Coastal Agencies” and networks working in the field of conservation of coastal natural areas had the opportunity to share respective strategies and on-going projects regarding coastal adaptation to climate change. This international workshop was a first step in a larger process of building future partnerships and projects in order to learn from each other. Therefore, Eurosite Director Harm Schoten represented the Eurosite network and highlighted Eurosite's approach in coastal adaptation to climate change.

URBAN WETLANDS FOR THE BENEFIT OF NATURE, CLIMATE AND PEOPLE
Eurosite member Natuurpunt, in cooperation with Ecover, has set up a project called Wetlands4Cities. The project was established after winning the “Fertilize the Future” award from Ecover in April 2021, and aims to develop at least five urban wetlands in Flanders over the next two years.

GUIDELINES FOR COMMUNITIES MANAGING LOCAL WETLANDS AND PEATLANDS
Guidelines for Communities Managing Local Wetlands and Peatlands is a useful handbook for community groups to support engagement with local wetland and peatland, developed by the Community Wetlands Forum. It is a living document, meaning that it is updated regularly and contains the most relevant information for community groups.

Irish factsheets of Natural Climate Buffers
The 2021 edition of the Natural Climate Buffers Study Tour visited four Irish sites, of which the Wetlands and Climate Change Working Group developed the below factsheets: Abbeyleix bog, the Cabragh wetlands, Clara bog, and Scohaboy bog.
