Glenn Beck is a libertarian television personality and radio host, author, television network producer, filmmaker, and entrepreneur. He currently hosts The Glenn Beck Program and his morning radio show, both of which are broadcast on The Blaze, which is an independent news and entertainment television network and website he founded in 2011 (and has an audience footprint of 50 million people per month). Previously Glenn hosted his nationally syndicated talk-radio show for CNN and Fox News.

Key Takeaways:

Why Glenn is at a Tech Conference

There’s a whole tribe of Glenn Beck listeners who are from all over the US and even who are international.

This is a group of people who still believes that tomorrow can be better, that you can still chart your own course and get up in the morning and change your life or change the world.
  • The people in Silicon Valley may be the only other people who still believe this and are actively engaged in it.
On Glenn Being an Entrepreneur

Glenn’s network, The Blaze, has a footprint of 50 million per month.

People can access it through digital, cable, traditional radio, and a podcast – there are 3 million podcast downloads a month.

Money is a byproduct and should be the last thing considered. Entrepreneurs should pay attention to the tribe – who is the entrepreneur trying to serve?

On Washington DC's Ability to Get Things Done

Washington DC has zero ability to get things done.

The progressives in both parties are growing farther apart and both moderate Republicans and Democrats are growing smaller.

It’s all the same. One party believes things should be done by the United Nations and the other believes the same things should be done by the United States and its military.
  • Both are wrong. It’s led to one hundred years of bloodshed. It doesn’t work.
We need to start – and this is starting to happen through entrepreneurs –ignoring and realizing you don’t need the media, and realizing that we actually trust our neighbors.

On Needing National Principles

Journalism as we know it is over.

The things that we have to unite on are principles. What’s happening now is that politicians only talk about national interests.
  • People’s interests change day to day.
We focus too much on interests, and we need to focus more on national principles.

We need national principles like we don’t torture and we don’t spy on Americans.
  • America is hated and untrusted around the world because we have no principles.
On Unemployment

Glenn believes that his 10-year-old son will probably not go to college.
  • He’ll do something self-directed and different.
He’ll work for companies that are dramatically changing, and he’ll be dramatically changing and re-inventing himself every three to five years.

On the US Policing the World, Radical Islam, and Russia

We do not have the ability to be the police of the world (and we shouldn’t be) anymore.

A journalist being beheaded is not radical Islam it is psychotic Islam.

They are using the Internet to connect to individuals and recruit them.
  • It’s working because they believe in something, and we don’t.
The scary thing is Russia right now is the only one standing up against Islamic extremism, and they are doing it in a Fascist manner.

When Putin went into Crimea he was attempting to create the third Roman Empire.
  • He’s like Hitler on steroids against the Army of Armageddon, and what are we doing?
The US isn’t doing anything or even talking about this.

We may be witnessing the beginnings of World War 3 between Russian fascism and the fascist, psychotic Islamic State.
  • The people around Putin are actually more dangerous than Putin himself.

On Why Glenn is at a Tech Conference
Throughout the day, Glenn has had several people ask him why he was a speaker at the Launch Festival.

There’s a whole tribe of Glenn Beck listeners who are from all over the US and even who are international.

This is a group of people who still believes that tomorrow can be better, that you can still chart your own course and get up in the morning and change your life or change the world.
  • That’s a diminishing belief in this country. Glenn’s “tribe” still believes this.
What’s going on in the world today is that those involved in the power structures (in New York, Chicago, and DC for example) are digging in, and trying to hold on, while the world is about to change.
  • Not a lot of people realize how much is changing right now.
For the first time since the Industrial Revolution, the average person has a chance to chart a new globe, all the way down to borders.
  • Glenn and his audience want to be part of that.
As Americans, they believe that together they can do something great.
  • The people in Silicon Valley may be the only other people who still believe this and are actively engaged in it.
The most important thing is not to calcify on things that we don’t know.

Most people don’t know Glenn Beck; and he doesn’t know them, but he, and Silicon Valley, each have an image of each other.

Glenn encourages us to have more conversations because in reality, many of our principles align.

The fundamental principle is that man should be free to set his own course.
On Glenn Being an Entrepreneur
Glenn’s network, The Blaze, has a footprint of 50 million per month.

People can access it through digital, cable, traditional radio, and a podcast – there are 3 million podcast downloads a month.
  • It’s a significant audience.
When Glenn worked in New York for CNN and FOX, neither was willing to look at the future and admit how much was changing and that their business model might become useless.
  • Glenn’s biggest problem was the gatekeepers.
He recently spoke at a radio convention, and it was sad.
  • The biggest leaders in radio could only talk about the death of radio, but failed to see the birth of the next thing.
They are worried about finding their next jobs, but Glenn thinks it’s easier than ever to find a job in radio.
  • He compares it to when he started out at 13 and needed an FCC license and a job at one of only three stations in town.
Now when he asks radio people about their competition, they talk about other big broadcasters, but their real competition is a 16-year-old with something authentic to say.

Glenn loved the previous interview with Fred Wilson about investing in companies where Fred said to not pay attention to the money.
  • Money is a byproduct and should be the last thing considered. Entrepreneurs should pay attention to the tribe – who is the entrepreneur trying to serve?
On What a Libertarian Is
A libertarian is someone who believes in the individual over the government controlling the individual.
  • Jason mentioned that he identifies with this as well.
On the Polarization of Republican Vs. Democrat
Glenn regrets being a part of the polarization of Republican Vs. Democrat.
  • He considers himself a storyteller, and he wanted to teach people what was going on.
When working for CNN he was teaching about what George Bush was doing, and calling for his impeachment for the things he was doing in office.
  • No one paid attention at that time, not until Glenn moved to FOX and there was a change in President.
The problem is not left or right. Glenn knows many people to the left of him, but they are libertarian, not progressive.
  • They believe in small government, and only want to live life in a certain way, without regulations.
It’s only when we put everyone together and truly celebrate diversity that we win, as in, “I don’t agree with you on anything at all, but let’s go have a beer anyway.”
On Washington DC's Ability to Get Things Done
Washington DC has zero ability to get things done.

The progressives in both parties are growing farther apart and both moderate Republicans and Democrats are growing smaller.

It’s the same amount of BS from both. Both parties do the same thing with their progressive ideology.
  • Generally speaking, Glenn finds corporations more trustworthy than the government.
The bigger the corporation, the more Glenn mistrusts them.
  • For example, Glenn doesn’t trust Comcast at all.
But at some point, even the largest corporation (assuming they don’t have government protection) is accountable to the people.

The smaller the company the more trustworthy they are because when you get smaller and smaller you can think of them, and they act, as a neighbor.

That’s why technology today is exciting because it allows you to connect one-on-one, and this is why things will start to get done.

Glenn has been in mass media his whole life, and he believes the industry is completely over.
  • He is trying to figure out how to connect more one-on-one.
He is addicted to Facebook because he can go on Facebook and connect individually to his tribe.

Glenn knows of one listener there in San Francisco who is having heart surgery and he’ll try to go visit him.
  • Something like that was unheard of until recently. Now Glenn can have these interactions through one-on-one conversation.
On How the Average American Views Technology from Silicon Valley
To be pessimistic (and Glenn does not think this is true), people may think that entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley are lumped together as leftist, big government people.
  • That’s disheartening.
Glenn has been trying to point out to his audience the number of libertarians, and that many are on the side of freedom.

On the tech entrepreneur side though, not many of them are talking to the “average American.”
  • The average person is often just being washed over with the results of the entrepreneurs work.
Glenn is a big fan of Walt Disney.

Disney changed the world and launched Disneyland in 1955, and more importantly, launched his television show at the same time.

One of the first episodes aired was called “Man in Space.”
  • Glenn believes Disney was looking forward to just this kind of timeframe.
In 1955, society had recently come through two world wars, one ending in a bloodbath and pandemic, the second ending in a nuclear explosion.
  • People thought it was the end of the world.
Many of them had grown up without electricity at the turn of the century and a short 45 years later they were considering space travel or nuclear annihilation.
  • That was frightening.
Disney built Disneyland in order to shut out the outside world as much as possible.

There was only one entrance, and inside the gate was Main Street, which at the time was full of cobblers, hat makers, and other craftsmen.

Disney was bringing in someone Glenn’s age and pointing to a world they might remember.
  • It was comforting.
Then at the end of that road around the corner was Tomorrowland - the future.

In “Man in Space” Disney took Ward Kimball, a voice actor, and introduced him to Wernher von Braun, a World War II rocket scientist.
  • von Braun believed that man could go to space and to the moon.
Disney put Kimball with the guy leading space technology and told Kimball to tell the story.
  • “Man in Space” became the first re-run to ever air in America because it was so wildly popular.
The legend is that Eisenhower called Disney to congratulate him for convincing the American public that they could go to space, and once the American public believes it, it can happen.
  • Glenn thinks there is a similar opportunity today.
We are the adults freaking out about the state of the world without Main Street to comfort us.

We’re freaked out at the prospect of 50% of jobs going away, borders changing, and the nature of money changing.
  • Society is looking for someone to calm us and show us how the future can happen.
The tension we’re feeling right now is actually the tension of those who currently have power.

Glenn has deals with a lot of these huge corporations, and all of them are freaked out because their infrastructure is about to become useless.
  • The rest of us should just let go and look towards the future.
On Needing National Principles
Journalism as we know it is over.
  • We’re all changing.
There’s a new system coming up and it will have growing pains, but we can trust the American people to get it right in the end.

The things that we have to unite on are principles. What’s happening now is that politicians only talk about national interests.
  • People’s interests change day to day.
We focus too much on interests, and we need to focus more on national principles.

No one is going to shut down Guantanamo.
  • No one has the balls to risk shutting [Guantanamo] down and then having an attack happen.
  • Too many people have too much to lose and not enough spine.
There is a good thing about all this – the death of shame (referring to a lack of privacy).

Eventually everybody’s pictures and everything else is going to leak, and we’ll all look ridiculous together.
  • Once that happens there will be a reset where we won’t be as afraid of privacy leaks anymore.
We need national principles like we don’t torture and we don’t spy on Americans.

Maybe our interests want to tell us in a certain situation we need to torture, but we need to just say no because of our principles.
  • America is hated and untrusted around the world because we have no principles.
Everyone is allowed one mistake.

Glenn believes that everyone was doing what they thought was right for the country when technologists built the technology [necessary for spying].

He believes we all generally trust each other and appreciate America.

The government asks for some help with something [i.e., catching terrorists] and we want to trust and help – but it’s a new era.
  • Uncle Sam is wearing stripes because he should be in prison! He’s the creepy uncle. Don’t help him.
On Voting
Voting doesn’t work because we keep playing this game: “This guy can’t win, so I’ll vote for this guy who possibly can.”

Really? Who thinks Jeb Bush is going to be a winner? Let’s move on from Bushes and plant some new trees.
On Unemployment
Glenn believes that his 10-year-old son will probably not go to college.
  • He’ll do something self-directed and different.
He’ll work for companies that are dramatically changing, and he’ll be dramatically changing and re-inventing himself every three to five years.
  • It will be a different world, but a good world for anyone who stays nimble.
We have to avoid the calcification of our minds.

When Glenn’s father was dying at age 75, Glenn gave him a book recommendation on an explorer, which was one of his favorite topics.

His father said, “I’m kind of done with that subject.”
  • The same thing happened with another book.
He had calcified – he was no longer interested in his once favorite topics.
  • That was the beginning of the end for him.
We lived in a world where calcification can happen at age 30 – but now that is over.

There was a man Glenn knew who was a raging alcoholic until age 35 and then radically changed.

If we can find a way to take the fear away, let go, and explore then it will be better tomorrow than it is today.
On the US Policing the World, Radical Islam, and Russia
We do not have the ability to be the police of the world (and we shouldn’t be) anymore.

When Glenn was at FOX, he warned about the caliphate.
  • Everyone mocked him. And now, we have ISIS.
A journalist being beheaded is not radical Islam it is psychotic Islam.
  • When they beheaded all those Christians on the beach, the banner above read, “A message in blood to the people of the Cross.”
  • That’s a holy war.
When you see the videos you realize that they are taking it seriously and they have gotten really smart.

They are using the Internet to connect to individuals and recruit them.

It’s working because they believe in something, and we don’t.
  • It’s screwed up what they believe in, but they fundamentally believe in it.
Too many people don’t know what they believe in anymore. Who are we as a people?

What they believe – this particular group – is that they are the Army of Armageddon.
  • They are calling on “the Roman Army” to come fight them.
They are hastening the return of their promised one that will wash the world in blood. It’s crazy.
  • The scary thing is Russia right now is the only one standing up against Islamic extremism, and they are doing it in a Fascist manner.
When Putin went into Crimea he was attempting to create the third Roman Empire.

He has been planting something exceptionally dangerous and Glenn has been warning the Christian community that they are in bed with people they don’t even know they are in  bed with.
  • You are one handshake away from Putin.
He is funding all kinds of anti-homosexual rhetoric worldwide to create a common cause with Christians, but he is different.
  • He’s like Hitler on steroids against the Army of Armageddon, and what are we doing?
The US isn’t doing anything or even talking about this.

Glenn thinks we should pull every troop home until we really are able to define what we’re doing.

The government is committing torturing in the name of the American people.

And if we don’t want that done, we have to say so, or go serve, or at least be willing to watch the videos.
  • We need to watch these videos and decide whether we’re for children being crucified over religion.
We need to decide on our principles and then look at our resources and determine what we can do.
  • We are all in, or we’re not. Period.
Glenn has a video that they are premiering on Facebook.
  • The video outlines similarities between recent Russian aggression in Crimea and Germany’s actions leading up to World War 2.
Glenn is putting these videos out weekly on Facebook, as kind of explainers on the history.

We are in a critical time period and he wants people to understand that he is not calling for war.
  • He is actually warning against a rush to arms.
We are undereducated on what is going on in the world.

We may be witnessing the beginnings of World War 3 between Russian fascism and the fascist, psychotic Islamic State.

The people around Putin are actually more dangerous than Putin himself.

Glenn had a three day, three hour special called “The Root” about the people around Putin.

The head of Moscow University looks to Hitler as an idol, but only as a beginning. He didn’t feel that Hitler was good enough.
  • He is looking to sweep all of Europe.
Another is the military mastermind behind Crimea.
  • These guys are actually pushing Putin. It’s very frightening.
