So Many Exciting Events This Fall....
It’s that time of year……for advance care planning
Family gatherings are right around the corner. Perhaps, you are starting to think about
Thanksgiving and Christmas and Hanukkah. While these gatherings are celebratory
times, they also offer precious opportunities to have conversations about your
end-of-life care wishes. Good friends of ours, a couple in Palo Alto, are both
turning 75 next month. Their three children are coming for a long birthday weekend
and our friends are preparing to have a meaningful conversation about their wishes
and values. While one child is their Medical Durable Power of Attorney for Health
Care (MDPOA) they are wanting the other two children to collaborate on decisions.
They are using The Conversation Starter Kit as a guide for this important discussion.
Many people find it difficult to broach this delicate topic. Perhaps the children don’t
want to talk about “it”. They would like to think that their parents are going to live forever.
Perhaps you, as the parent, fear that talking about death will make it happen.
You don’t know where to start.
The Conversation Project in Boulder County can help. We have trained coaches who
can guide you in choosing a decision-maker, using a process developed by the American
Bar Association. A coach can help you complete the MDPOA documents. (Secret:
It does not require an attorney in the State of Colorado.) Most importantly, a coach can help you
prepare to talk to your family about your values and wishes. We know that this is often the
most difficult part of the process.
This process requires planning and preparation. Even those of us who can barely
remember the energy burst of a new school year, find Autumn to be a productive period.
It is time to prepare for the holidays and for winter. Don’t hesitate to ask for help. This is
a free service of the non-profit, Conversation Project. Our coaches are ready to help you.
You can contact us at email@example.com or 303-442-0436, ext 133.
We are so happy to return from a wonderful summer to announce a series of interesting events, forums and presentations around future healthcare conversations.
