As 2014 draws to a close DMFHC is compelled to reach out to our partners and friends to let you know how much we appreciate your support.  The elimination of housing discrimination is a community effort and we want to thank you again for the contributions you have all made.

The new year also inspires us to reflect on our cause; looking back at how far we have come, yet understanding there is still so much to do.  In recent months, most of us are aware of the tragedy in Ferguson, Missouri, surrounding the death of an unarmed black teenager by a police officer, however, many people are not aware that decades of systematic housing discrimination is at the root of much of the civil unrest.  Over decades, a mixture of prejudice attitudes as well public housing policies from federal, state, and local governments around the country created highly segregated neighborhoods significantly lacking in access to opportunity and upward mobility.  Though many of these explicitly segregationist policies were banned in the 1900's, their impact echoes in the segregated communities we still see today.  For more information about how government action contributed significantly to housing discrimination, see this report by the Economic Policy Institute.

These events have only deepened the passion and determination of the staff of DMFHC to continue eliminating housing discrimination throughout Colorado.  We have had many successes this year and are proud of the growth we have seen in just over two years of operation.  In 2014, DMFHC has:

  • Provided training to 175 individuals

  • Placed more than 160 Public Service Announcements

  • Distributed more than 3,100 pieces of literature

  • Investigated 86 Fair Housing complaints

  • Referred 15 housing discrimination complaints

  • Achieved 26 positive outcomes through advocacy and enforcement efforts

Again, thank you so much for the support you have provided as it makes all of our success possible.  We look forward to the new year and the opportunities it will provide to continue our pursuit of eliminating housing discrimination in all its forms.

Happy Holidays from everyone at DMFHC!

Our work speaks for itself!

“Thank You so much for your response and help by sending the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development-U.S. Division of Justice Guide on Reasonable Modifications/clarifying Accommodations to me.  I believe that this documentation makes it very clear as to the clarity of the law and the direction that would guide a Board such as our HOA Board and the Property Manager in making a positive decision…”

-Letter received from HOA Board Member

“Thank you for sharing the information. It’s a shame we're still talking discrimination in this day and age. Your organization has done a great job in putting genuine, true, and factual information out to the public!  You all have also done great in supporting families and communities. Keep raising awareness!!!”

- Leslii Lewis, Denver African American Commission

Fair Housing Tip:
Women are protected by the Familial Status protections of the Fair Housing Act while they are pregnant or on maternity leave.  This means it is unlawful to make housing unavailable or provide different terms or conditions because of a woman's pregnancy, maternity leave, or the presence of children within her home.
