(ARAGON, Spain, Feb. 23rd, 2016) – David Porcelli announced today he will be making the transition to the European Formula Renault 2.0 Championship with Mark Godwin Racing for the 2016 season. The 22-year-old from Montclair, N.J. makes the move after finishing second in the Skip Barber IndyCar shootout in 2014.
“Racing in Europe on the ladder to Formula 1 is a dream come true." Said Porcelli. "Not only do I get to do what I love, but I also get to represent my country. I am one of very few American drivers in an international formula series. I’ve always been passionate about cars, and speed. Thanks to Skip Barber, I’ve been put on the fast track to a professional career in racing. Eurocup is a huge step for me, but I am confidant that this is the right fit. It has taken a ton of hard work to get here and I don’t intend to slow down. I am honored to step onto the international stage with MGR behind me.“
David tested with Mark Godwin’s team in late 2015, and quickly decided on MGR as his preferred option for 2016. Having evaluated all the possibilities, the two both decided on the Formula Renault 2.0 EuroCup as the ideal place for David to make his European debut. While it will be a big step up for David, Mark Godwin had nothing but great things to say about the young American’s ambition.
"David’s technical knowledge and understanding of the dynamic principles of the car set him aside from the majority of drivers and he takes a lot of interest in the operation of the team." Commented team owner Mark Godwin. "His ability to understand the data and feedback from the engineer and utilize this in the correct way on track gives great optimism for the future. David has already proved he has ability and with the continued support and driver development from MGR Motorsport together with his own beliefs, drive and determination to succeed he can look forward to a successful 2016 season in Formula Renault 2.0."
Porcelli is currently in Spain getting ready for his attack on the European racing scene via a two-day test at the MotorLand Aragón circuit. The 2016 season opens at the same track on April 16-17, followed by the season's marquee event, the Monaco Grand Prix, held on May 27-28 in the streets of Monaco. A total of 14 races will take place in seven different countries.
Taking a plunge into the unknown is something David has never been afraid of, and facing Europe’s best is a task he is more than willing to take on.
“Challenges have always motivated me. Facing Europe’s finest will give me a high enough ceiling for me to grow at my own pace. I know that my maturity and situational awareness will give me an advantage on track. MGR is a perfect fit. I am very interested in car set up and I need an environment where I can be myself. Mark is an extremely talented engineer and a supportive coach. I truly believe that working with MGR motorsport will advance my skill set in the areas that I am most interested in and bring me to a strong position for the 2017 season.” Ended Porcelli.
