Covid-19 has reached the coast of Maine. MCFA has curated a list of resources to keep fishermen healthy and financially secure.
Supporting Maine's Fishermen During Crisis
Covid-19 has made all our lives more difficult, but for Maine’s more than 5,000 community fishermen and seafood businesses, this is a crisis far beyond being trapped at home. Seafood sales, and the entire seafood marketplace, has been upended, undermining businesses and creating uncertainty and fear for the future of Maine’s fishermen. In response, MCFA’s staff has been working around the clock to support our fishing communities and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished.
As seafood sales dried up, MCFA launched several initiatives connecting consumers with Maine seafood. The tastiest way you can help minimize the effects of Covid-19 on Maine’s marine economy is by purchasing fresh seafood.
You can purchase lobster, scallops, groundfish, mussels, clams, and eels RIGHT NOW! Here's a listof Maine seafood businesses selling Maine seafood.
Leading Through Advocacy
Through MCFA’s leadership in Maine and around the country, we succeeded in securing $300 million in the CARES Act dedicated to the seafood industry. Fishermen were almost left out of the stimulus entirely, but MCFA was able to work with our congressional delegation to ensure that fishermen were included. This is only a drop in the bucket in comparison to what is needed to support our nation’s fishermen, but it is a start for those hanging on here in Maine.
How You Can Help
We are proud to represent Maine’s fishermen and remain committed to our work supporting them through this global pandemic. But we cannot do it alone! While this crisis persists, you have the opportunity to help preserve a way of life in Maine from the safety of your home.
