Ancient Tree Forum Newsletter - May 2015
Summer Forum 18 and 19 June 2015

There's still time to book onto the Ancient Tree Forum's annual Summer Forum, to be held in Norfolk and Suffolk. The programme, now published on the ATF's website, promises two full days of field visits and presentations from expert speakers.

The mornings will be spent at two indoor locations, where you'll have a chance to hear from some of the country's leading specialists on ancient trees, their management and biodiversity. These will include Professor Tom Williamson from the Landscape Group at the University of East Anglia, and Professor Lynne Body from the Cardiff School of Biosciences. The first afternoon will be spent at Aspal Close, Beck Row, a medieval wood pasture site known for its 200 or so veteran and ancient oak trees. On the second day, there will be an afternoon field trip to Rummer’s Lane orchard (pictured) at Wisbech St Mary, where you'll be able to see some active veteran orchard tree restoration.

Free training on identifying and recording veteran trees
Bushy Park in Middlesex is the venue for this practical one-day course, with the Ancient Tree Forum and the Woodland Trust, to be held on Saturday 6 June 2015.

At the end of the course, you will be able to to recognise a veteran tree, measure its girth, record its veteran characteristics, and submit your data to the Ancient Tree Inventory.

Bushy Park is nationally important for its veteran and other ancient trees, and was recently given SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) status.

Come and meet us at the Arb Show this June
The Ancient Tree Forum will once again have a stand at the Arb Association's annual show, which this year is being held at Westonbirt, the National Arboretum, in Gloucestershire.

We have a great spot at the show, next to a veteran tree, where some demonstration tree work is going to be carried out. Copies of our book 'Ancient and other veteran trees: further guidance on management' will be on sale at the discounted price of £25.

The Arb Show takes place on Friday 5 June to Saturday 6 June 2015

The object of 'Valuing and managing veteran trees; A three day advanced course for trainers' is to train people to be able to deliver a one day course on veteran tree management.  Participants will be given training, presentations and handouts, to enable them to run the course themselves.

The trainers' course is made up of both indoor and outdoor activities and is very interactive. Courses will be run in Cumbria in October, and in Essex in December 2015.

Ancient Tree Forum Wales is launched
ATF Wales was launched in April, at Dinefwr's medieval deer park in Carmarthenshire.

Attendees at the launch event were taken on a tree walk by Brian Muelaner, Chair of the Ancient Tree Forum, to see veteran trees on the National Trust site. A programme of future events is being planned for the new  group, led by Tracey Lovering who works for the Wales Biodiversity Partnership at Natural Resources Wales.
