Boys & Girls Clubs of the San Luis Valley

May Newsletter

We had a pretty exciting April this year! Lots of fun things for our members, as well as awesome fundraising opportunities for people in our community to give back to the Club. Check out just some of the few amazing things we did in the past month!

Our 2021 Youth of the Year Event

Every year, we hold a special breakfast to celebrate our Youth of the Year. Youth of the Year is open to any of our teen members and they must go through a rigorous application process and show strong character and integrity.

This year, our exceptional YOY was Cynthia Mejia! She gave a wonderful and heartfelt speech at our first in-person event in over a year. There wasn't a dry eye in the house! Afterwards, she was awarded a full-ride scholarship to ASU!

Though this year's event was smaller than past ones due to COVID, we still managed to raise over $11,000 and counting!

Couldn't make it to our YOY event, but still interested in giving back? Click the link below visit to our Ways to Give page. Not only do we accept financial contributions, but we're always looking for any type of donation to help with our programming!

Ways to Give
The Club

We are going to open a BGCSLV teen center!

The teens have a huge part of the planning process for the center and have a say in nearly every creative aspect of creating it, even grant writing.

Moving forward, they will be working with ActionLab 360 and Mikela Tarlow to educate and train the teens about entrepreneurship. Tarlow will set up unique activities that focus on topics such as team building, communications, branding, marketing, and customer relations. Then, as more time goes on, the teens will have opportunities to suggest modifications to the activities and courses to create a more customized experience as they work on their general workforce skills.

The new teen center, The Club, is going in the building where Body Tune Up used to reside. The front room will be a public arcade that will employ teen members, while the back will be a homework and relaxation space for those teen members of the BGCSLV.

Keep an eye out for the “Coming Soon” banner that will hang outside the new center.
Vaccine Clinic

Last Friday, the BGCSLV hosted a COVID-19 vaccination clinic!

The clinic has been made possible by a grant through Together We Protect – Colorado’s Vaccine Equity Fund, Immunize Colorado and Colorado Vaccine Equity Taskforce. This grant aims to provide communities disproportionately affected by COVID-19 with low-barrier vaccination opportunities.

According to Together We Protect, marginalized groups face increased challenges in accessing the vaccine due to structural barriers such as a lack of culturally responsive and accurate information, access to transportation and/or interpreter services, and inadequate healthcare services, to name a few. Ensuring all individuals have access to the vaccine and achieving a high vaccination rate across all Colorado communities will be necessary to mitigate the disproportionate impacts of the pandemic and prevent widening disparities going forward.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of the San Luis Valley is eager to be a part of these vaccination efforts. In agreement with Caring for the Colorado Foundation, one of the funding partners of Together We Protect, the Club wants to make the vaccine as accessible as possible to everyone in the local community.
