Statement on Social Justice

June 5, 2020

Dear Titans,

There is a great deal of unrest in the country right now due to the recent murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, and Breonna Taylor. These are just the latest high-profile killings that have entered the national consciousness in a long history of brutalities inflicted against the Black community. As we all struggle through the callous and unconscionable loss of so many Black lives, we know many of our students need the support that as school counselors we so often provide. Our hearts ache for our students and while we can not undo the hurt or injustice, we sincerely wish we could be together to process the emotions so many of us are feeling. Undoubtedly, the disruption of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic adds to our individual and collective grief, isolation, sadness, anger, and pain.

As we move forward, we want to be very clear. The T.C. Williams High School Department of School Counseling is committed to ardently addressing issues of equity and social justice. While we may not always know exactly what to say or share the same experiences, we will not be silent about race and racism. We stand with and for our students.

We understand that the weight of what is happening in our world is a lot to bear, but you are never alone. Help is always available. A direct link to our contact information is in our signature followed by a short list of resources for students, families and fellow educators.

Black Lives Matter.
Justice for Breonna.
Justice for Ahmaud.
Justice for George.
Justice for Tony.
Titans Together.

“In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”
-Martin Luther King Jr.

In solidarity,
Department of  School Counseling
