The Barrett Buzz: News from Charles Barrett Elementary School
Principal's News...
February Greetings!

This month students have been reviewing our PBIS school-wide expectations (use kind words, use kind actions, listening, and taking care of our school).   Last week students participated in lessons and activities about taking care of our school.  This coming week will focus on using kind words and actions.  Students have been doing a wonderful job!  Please review these expectations with your child at home.  Students also enjoyed their Valentine’s Day parties this week!  Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped organize these parties.

Additionally, I wanted to notify the community that Ms. Angie has been told by ACPD that she is only to direct pedestrians for the crosswalk.  I know that this has been problematic during arrival and we have notified safety and security of this issue.  They are currently in contact with ACPD.  We have also notified central office of the community’s concern.  Please know that we are communicating with various stakeholders about this issue.  We will also communicate any information that is given to us to all of you.   As a friendly reminder, please make sure that car riders are being dropped off at kiss and ride, which is located in the parking lot past the school.   We want to ensure that all students are safe during arrival.

I hope you all enjoy a long weekend with your families!  We will see everyone back at school on Tuesday, February 18th, 2020.
Best,
Kellie Conlan, Ed. D.

Introducing Pandas in Pajamas!
March 12
 6:30-7:30 pm
Please join us for an evening filled with fun activities for you and your child.  This year, we are combining our Math and Literacy Nights into one night….Pandas in Pajamas!  Students can come dressed in their pajamas, ready to engage in a variety of math and reading games which can be easily replicated at home.  We will have card and dice games for math, along with Sudoku and Tangrams.  There will even be a Math Dice Tournament for anyone who would like to participate!

Parents and their children will also have an opportunity to read by a “campfire”, perform puppet shows, and show off their amazing singing skills in our Karaoke room.  For those who would enjoy a more peaceful outing, we will have a room where you can listen to some of your favorite bedtime stories.

*Every child who attends will receive a small reading or math prize!

Attention 5th Grade Families
Ms. Price will be meeting individually with all fifth graders over the next five weeks to discuss course selection for sixth grade. Students will complete a draft course selection form by circling the classes they would like to take next year. The draft and a Program of Studies Booklet will come home with students on the day she meets with them. A due date will be indicated at the top of the form. Please have a conversation with your child about the classes he/she circled on the draft. Once you approve of the courses circled, please sign the bottom. Your child needs to return that to Ms. Price. If you have questions about specific classes please reference the Program of Studies booklet. It contains descriptions of every class taught in middle school. Also please feel free to reach out to Ms. Price with questions. She can be reached at 703-619-8384 or sprice2@acps.k12.va.us
SCA Spirit Day
SCA Spirit Day on February 21st is Rainbow Day-- wear your favorite color!

Our next SCA meeting is March 23rd.  All officers and representatives are expected to attend.  Alternates will be invited to attend on an as-needed basis.
PBIS
Charles Barrett teachers and students are using the month of February to brush up on our school-wide PBIS expectations: taking care of our school, using kind words, using kind actions, and listening. Our first week focused on taking care of our school, and Ms. Boyd created slides starring our own students modeling behavior such as picking up litter in the hallway, keeping cafeteria tables clean, and keeping our feet off the auditorium chairs. Students also brainstormed how they would work harder to keep our school clean and beautiful, and how materials could be recycled and/or reused to cut down on unnecessary waste. We are looking forward to the next couple of weeks in which we focus on other school-wide expectations!
March Concert
The March 19 concert will celebrate Music in Our Schools Month! Grades 1 and 4 will sing, and the 4th grade band and orchestra will also perform. Concerts are at 1:15pm and 7:00pm. For the evening performance, students should arrive NO EARLIER than 6:30pm. More details will be announced in March. Please contact Ms. Toton or Ms. Flynn with any questions!
Adopt A Gym Fun Run
The SIXTH annual Adopt-a-Gym Fun Run is on Friday, March 20th from 3-4pm on the field.  This year, we will be adopting schools from the U.S. as well as Thailand!  Keep your eyes peeled for flyers and pledge sheets for more information!
Wellness
It's that time of year again where students are getting sick.  Please remind your child to wash their hands throughout the day to prevent the spread of germs.
