Neighborhood Outing
Charles Barrett teachers will be visiting neighborhoods on Thursday, November 21st to play outdoor games with students (3:30 – 4:30 pm).   We will be visiting the same neighborhoods that we went to in August.  We can’t wait to see all of you!

-Loyd Apartments (grilling area off of Tennessee Ave.)
-The Pit/Beverly Park (620 N Overlook Dr.)
-Woodbine Tot Lot (1509 Woodbine St.)
-Private Drive (playground)
-Florence/Milan Drive (playground behind building 3812 on Milan Dr.)
-Park Fairfax:  Coryell Pool (grassy area in front of pool)
 
Thanksgiving Luncheon

Charles Barrett Elementary School invites you to our Thanksgiving Luncheon, to have lunch with your child/children, on Thursday, November 21, 2019.  Flyers went home with students this week.  We hope to see you there!

*Lunch times are staggered in each grade level by a few minutes.

First Grade:  10:55 am - 11:28 am
Kindergarten:  11:08 am - 11:42 am
Third Grade:  11:27 am - 12:03 pm
Fourth Grade:  11:40 am - 12:16 pm
Fifth Grade:  11:57 am - 12:30 pm
Second Grade:  12:17 pm - 12:53 pm
 
Brrrrrr!  It’s Cold Outside!

The temperature has recently dropped in the month of November.  Please make sure that students are wearing coats, hats, and gloves when they come to school. This will ensure they are comfortable during arrival and outdoor recess.    
 
Traffic
I have been in contact with our police liaison about the traffic issues in the morning.   He will be at Barrett a few times next week during arrival.  I will continue to keep you updated about this situation.
BOOK FAIR AT HOORAY FOR BOOKS
 
Join us on December 1st from 10:00am-3:00pm at Hooray For Books (1555 King Street) for story time with your favorite CBES teachers, holiday shopping and a visit "The Mean One…Mr. Grinch!"  The store will donate a portion of all sales to the PTA.  This will be used entirely to support the Charles Barrett Giving Tree program which purchases holiday gift cards for families with needs in our school community.  Teachers will have wish lists of desired classroom books and you can always ask for assistance in finding the perfect holiday gift.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR GARDEN TO TABLE EVENT
 
Thursday, November 21st is our Thanksgiving lunch at school.  In addition to the ACPS menu, we will serve the sweet potatoes that we grew and harvested from our school gardens.  To do this, we need a few volunteers in the cafeteria on Wednesday, 11/20 and Thursday 11/21.  Please visit the MemberHub Signup to help at https://cbes.memberhub.com/HSR42593I22506

News from Alexandria City Public Schools

Our panel of experts was able to answer many interesting questions raised at the event held at Minnie Howard.
 
During last month's Hispanic Heritage Celebration, we spoke with successful ACPS alumni about the challenges of adjusting to a new way of life. We asked first and second-generation Americans how they overcame adversity. Hear three of their stories.
 
Superintendent Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr. presented a ten-year vision for the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Budget that builds capacity across all grade levels, increases safety and security, modernizes facilities for the 21st century, and ensures equitable investment across all schools.
 
Within ACPS, we are fortunate to have two elementary schools that utilize the immersion method of language acquisition to teach both English and Spanish together.
 
Eleven nationalities speaking multiple languages play alongside each other as they attempt to figure out life in the U.S. Don't miss this video featuring a special T.C. cameo!
