Google rewards mobile-friendly websites
 

There are now two good reasons to ensure that your website is configured to display correctly on mobile devices.  First, Google announced in November 2014 that mobile-friendly websites will get a special “mobile-friendly” label in their mobile search result.  Find out if your website complies, with Google's test

And the second reason is the relentless rise in mobile use, coupled with the fact that only a small fraction of  SMEs have a mobile-friendly site (this article is a few months old), while 45% have no website at all.  Businesses have been slow to catch up, so having a mobile-friendly website puts you ahead of the curve.

Local listings for local businesses


If you are a local business, you will reap benefits from taking steps to be found in a local search. 20% of Google’s four billion searches a day are local, and on mobile, it’s closer to 50%. Search engines have a section reserved for local businesses, and roughly half of mobile local search occurs the in a mobile app. Google Maps is the most popular but there are others: Yahoo, Mapquest, Bing, Yellowbook, Yelp, Superpages,  Apple Maps andYell.com.

Get started with your local listing, and remember that your website will only work for you if you spend time promoting it. 

 

Keeping the keys to your website


While Applegreen does not plan to go under a bus anytime soon, what would happen to our websites if we should vanish? It’s a question worth asking, given our experience of rescuing websites whose developers have dispappeared over the horizon. We have sometimes had a difficult job retrieving the domain and hosting from third parties, in order to continue updating the site.

We can assure all our exisiting clients that their data and passwords are saved and backed up, and some of you have made your own hosting arrangements anyway. But if you wish to hold on to your own data and passwords, and do not already do so, this can be arranged.
