Week of January 30, 2017
1. What hobbies do you enjoy? When and why did you start doing them?
As Patrick mentioned over donuts, I love going to estate sales. I started going when I bought a house in my second year of law school; it was the best way to get unique, quality furniture, and estate sales usually have great deals on yard equipment. I love the thrill of hunting for new things and (especially) negotiating the price. My favorite finds: a hand-carved walnut desk from the 1880s and a large print from 1924 called The Horse Fair. I recently had the print restored, and it'll be in my office soon. Also, my favorite hobby is hanging out with my family.
2. What is your favorite season of the year?
Can anything beat Fall in Michigan? Maybe Michigan summers.
3. What is your favorite childhood book?
The Phantom Tollbooth. It's such a clever book, and I remember feeling like I was in on a secret when I read it. One of my favorite things to do is reading books that I loved to my kids. My son, Everett, and I are currently reading the Encyclopedia Brown series.
4. What movie or TV show could you watch over and over and still love?
My parents, Jeff and Renee. They are kind, smart, fun, and driven. They've modeled how to be a good spouse and parent, and they are very cool people all around.
Arrested Development. My husband, Joe, and I were dating when it was on TV, and we were obsessed. We can still watch it together anytime. I know it's not unique to be an Arrested Development fan, though. There are dozens of us. Dozens!
5. Who is your greatest role model or mentor in life?

Help Us Identify Noteworthy Federally Funded Projects!
Each year our University of Michigan Washington D.C. Office shares with Congress key projects that illustrate the critical importance of funding for research at U-M. We highlight impactful examples of U-M sponsored projects, funded with Federal research dollars.
If you know of any particularly noteworthy Federal projects that were active in the past fiscal year (i.e., must have been funded or active prior to June 30, 2016), please let Constance Colthorp know ASAP, and she will further investigate.
Don't hesitate to include anything, even if you think the project has already been mentioned in Michigan Research or promoted in some other way. Thanks!
Flattening a PDF Document
Some PDF documents contain images, headers or digital signatures that may not be fully integrated into the document. These types of PDFs can cause problems in the SF424 documents when running hide/show errors or when trying to validate the application. Additionally, it may prevent the NIH’s eRA Commons from being able to correctly open the files.
See instructions of how to "flatten" a PDF document. It is recommended that you “flatten” all PDF documents that contain images, headers or digital signatures before uploading them into eRPM NIH in order to avoid any potential issues with the submission.
Tax-Related Identity Theft
January is the kickoff to tax season with W-2s becoming available. Nationwide, we again are seeing an increase in tax-related identity theft. Also, Saturday, January 28, 2017,

Winter 2017 Mitten Matching Blood Drive
The inaugural Mitten Matchup (formerly known as Face-Off Blood Challenge) is officially underway! This winter semester, Michigan State University and The University of Michigan are attempting to raise 2,000 pints
of blood. The remaining drives will go through March 1st
. Whether you have never donated before or have donated every year, we need your help! Over the past 34 years, the University of Michigan has collected enough blood to potentially save over 650,000 lives
, and none of this would have been possible without the donors. Please help us in the continued fight to save lives across the state and country.

January/February MHealthy Programs
Today, stretching and flexibility programs are one of the basic components of a comprehensive exercise program. Flexibility is needed to perform everyday activities with relative ease. Flexibility tends to deteriorate with age, often due to a sedentary lifestyle. It is important that flexibility training and strength training are never painful - it is optimal to go to the point of slight tension or discomfort (but never pain), and continue to breathe. Stretching should be held for 15 - 60 seconds. Learn more about stretching and flexibility training with this worksheet from MHealthy.
Stretching is an important part of every workout - remember to include it as part of your cool down.
