New! PEERRS Human Subjects Research Protections certification course

The PEERRS humans subjects protections course has been updated to reflect the revised Common Rule (45 CFR 46) provisions. This new course, which replaces both of the Biomedical and Social/Behavioral courses, will be available in My LINC on Monday, January 21 to coincide with the release of the revised Common Rule.

Current certifications

If you have a current certification in either of the following PEERRS courses, you will automatically receive credit for the new Human Subjects Research Protections course with the same expiration date of your current certification:

Human Subjects Biomedical & Health Module & Certification Test
Human Subjects Social & Behavioral Sciences Module & Certification Test

PEERRS Information in the PAF or Award

In eRPM, credit for this new course will display as a separate listing in the PEERRS Info sections of the PAF or Award (under the Contacts and Compliance tabs, respectively) for those who have a current certification in a PEERRS human subjects module.

At a minimum, you may see two human subjects courses for an individual in the PEERRS Info section: one of the old courses and the new Human Subjects Research Protections course.
At a maximum, you may see four human subjects courses: Biomedical Module, Social/Behavioral Module, Human Subjects Waiver, and the new Human Subjects Research Protections course.

Human Subjects Training Requirements

Per U-M Human Research Protections Program training requirements, only one current human subjects certification (or waiver) is required for human subjects research, regardless of the type of research (i.e., biomedical or social/behavioral).

Therefore, if you see a list showing multiple human subjects courses for an individual in the PAF or Award and at least one of those courses has an Expiration Date which is in the future of the current date, that certification is "current" and satisfies U-M and federal human subjects protection training guidelines.
