All Saints Episcopal Church

4033 SE Woodstock Blvd.
Portland, OR 97202
(503) 777-3829

The Rev. Laura C. Truby, Rector
The Rev. Kathleen Borsch, Deacon
Dr. James Denman, Director of Music
Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
The first season of the church's liturgical year is Advent and begins next Sunday, November 27. The color of the season is purple or deep blue and lasts for four Sundays. We use an Advent Wreath to help us prepare for the birth of Christ. A candle is lighted on the First Sunday of Advent and another each week until all four candles are lighted on 4 Advent. Sometimes a rose or pink candle is used on 3 Advent, reflecting the tradition that the lessons for this Sunday are celebratory rather than penitential. Small Advent wreaths can be a focus for family devotions during the season.
Adult Forum
The Adult Forum has finished viewing the excellent film, The Twelve Apostles. Since we are now beginning the Advent season, we have selected portions of the BBC film series, "Jesus the Complete Story - The Early Years," to be shown during these weeks. This series uses archaeological discoveries and computerized reconstruction to shed further light on society during Jesus’ time on earth, and this Sunday, December 4, our first 20-minute segment will highlight the childhood of Jesus.

In celebration of 30 years of marriage, Ron and Shirley Jones will renew their wedding vows on Sunday, December 4 during the 10:15 a.m. service. There will be a reception for the entire church after in the Parish Hall. Please join in celebrating their renewal of covenant marriage vows.

Holiday Open House

Please join us in the Mustard Seed, following the 10:15 a.m. service on Sunday, December 4th, for our Holiday Open House.
Great buys for the entire family!
Special Thanks to the members of our Episcopal Church Women (ECW) for their very generous additional gift of $3,000, for a total of $6,000 this year, contributed to our general church budget and expenses. This was well over and above their pledged amount. It comes from Mustard Seed sales, both Fair and Pie Sales, and other events.
Gifts for Holgate House
All Saints has been sending Christmas Gifts to individuals at Holgate House for a very long time and the tradition continues this year. The children and their families will be delivering the gifts at 1pm on Dec. 21. We sing to the residents at their doors as we deliver the gifts. We will have the Holgate House Tree up with the angel ornaments for people to take and shop for the requested items as soon as I get gift list. The children received some lovely thank you notes last year.

We are still in need of deodorant and socks. I will be able to take donations until Wednesday, December 14. Thank you.

Christmas Altar and Church Flowers:
Please consider a Christmas greens and flower donation, as we fill the church with the joy of this Advent - and the opportunity to celebrate special moments of this year, remember family and friends, and give thanks. Please use the form in our Sunday bulletin or call Nancy Carr at 916-203-7132 or
William Temple House Donations
In recent weeks, the people of All Saints have donated 214 items (125 cans, 21 jars of peanut butter, and 68 other things) to the blue William Temple House barrel, which will supply their food pantry at their NW Portland location. This is especially exciting and encouraging to me, because a couple of months ago someone came in the building and stole most of the items when the barrel was located near the front door. Now this has been replenished and even overflowing! Thank you to everyone for your generosity and compassion for those in need. For more information on this ministry of our diocese, please go to

Bishop's Visitation

Our Bishop, The Rt. Rev. Michael J. Hanley, will be coming to All Saints for his annual visit on Sunday, February 19, 2017. The Bishop's Visitation is an opportunity for Baptism, Confirmation, Reception and Reaffirmation. Please speak with Kathy Martin or Mother Laura if you are interested. Confirmation classes can be provided.

In the course of their Christian development, those baptized at an early age are expected, when they are ready and have been duly prepared, to make a mature public affirmation of their faith and commitment to the responsibilities of their Baptism and to receive the laying on of hands by the bishop.

Those baptized as adults, unless baptized with laying on of hands by a bishop, are also expected to make a public affirmation of their faith and commitment to the responsibilities of their Baptism in the presence of a bishop and to receive the laying on of hands.

We hope to have our new altar dedicated by Bishop Michael, as well as to have him bless our new Meditation Garden during his time with us.
