Most high, omnipotent, good Lord, grant your people grace to renounce gladly the vanities of this world; that, following the way of blessed Francis, we may for love of you delight in your whole creation with perfectness of joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Blessing of the Animals
Sunday, October 1

On Sunday, October 1 during both services, we will be celebrating the feast day of the Patron Saint of Animals, Saint Francis of Assisi. It's customary that in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi's love for all creatures, animals are led to churches for a special ceremony called the “Blessing of the Animals.”
Please bring your special furry or feathered friend to church for this Sunday blessing.
This Sunday, October 1, at 9:30 a.m. in the Guild Room, the Adult Forum will continue a 12-week study featuring the videotape series "The Religions of the World." Narrated by actor Ben Kingsley, it presents an overview of Buddhism, Judaism, Catholicism, Protestantism, and Islam.

This series can help us find greater understanding and mutual respect for the beliefs of our neighbors and coworkers. You can drop in on the class on any given Sunday. No preparation needed! Please join us.

Oct. 1 – Buddhism, Part 2
Oct. 8 – Judaism, Part 1
Oct. 15 – Judaism, Part 2
Oct. 22 – Catholicism, Part 1
Oct. 29 – Catholicism, Part 2
Nov. 5 – Protestantism, Part 1
Nov. 12 – Protestantism, Part 2
Nov. 19 – Islam, Part 1
Nov. 26 – Islam, Part 2

I was very touched by the anthem, "I Come This Day," written and directed last Sunday by Belinda Nissen. A very special thanks to Belinda, Chuck Bateman, who played the tin whistle, Jerry Meter the keyboard, and to both Family and Chancel Choir members for your gift of sharing this lovely piece based on a Celtic prayer I love. It meant a lot to me.

It is hard to believe, but our Administrative Assistant, Cris Breshears, has been with us in ministry a full year now.  Her anniversary was September 20th! We are so very blessed to have someone of her caliber and spirit in our church office.  We thank you, Cris!

The Building and Grounds Committee, backed by the Vestry, made a commitment to replace the tree taken down in front of our All Saints sign.  We would like to do even better and make it a two-for-one replacement in order to show our support for enhancing the tree canopy and beautifying Portland.

Thanks to a very generous gift by the Homestead Pre-school, we are on our way to achieving this goal!  If you would like to contribute to this effort to beautify our grounds, please contact Jerry Meter ( who has set up a Pay Pal account for us!  Thanks Jerry! ) or leave a check or cash with Jerry or Judy Clark or any Vestry member or Cris in the office.  Any amount is gratefully accepted.  Call Judy Clark for more information.
Youth group is open to all of our young people in 6th grade and up, and I am very much looking forward to spending time in formation with our youth!
We are continuing to use a modified version of the Rite 13/Journey to Adulthood program, which views confirmation as a vital rite of passage in the church and aims to prepare young people to make a mature commitment to Christ at around the age of 16.

If you would like to now more about the program progression or have any questions, I encourage you to visit or just ask me!
See you all Sundays at 4:00 p.m.!

New Books of Common Prayer
The new Books of Common Prayer have arrived and are on display in the Parish Hall and in the Narthex.  Any parishioner who would like the opportunity to donate toward each book in memory of a loved one or dedicated to someone, now can do so. You can place the completed forms in the collection basket on Sunday, drop in the Church Office, or give them to me.
The suggested donation per book is $15. A special memorial sticker will be made and put in the front of each BCP that are given in someone’s honor.  The Feast of All Saints is Sunday, November 5th, a great time to honor your loved ones with a memorial BCP. That is our deadline for replacing the older and worn BCP’s in the Sanctuary with the new ones.  When you see Bev Curtis, please thank her for making it possible to start this now almost completed project.  Thank you also goes out to the Vestry for making this project become a reality.

A Prayer for Special Guidance
Almighty Lord, source of all knowledge and loving kindness, bring your grace upon the  All Saint’s Search Committee as we discern the needs of our parish in finding a new priest to serve as our Spiritual guide. Give us ears to hear, open hearts to feel, and clarity of vision so we might see your light. Shine your light upon us and grant us courage to move forward for your Honor and Glory. Let us all work together in your spirit of love for all who make up our All Saints’ community. We ask this For His Sake, our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen

Girardian Glossary of Terms (Defined by Abbot Andrew Marr, OSB)

Scandal: Derived from the Greek skandalon. Girard uses this word in its biblical meaning of a "stumbling block" or "obstacle." He suggests that when two or more people enter into conflict fueled by mimetic desire, they become stumbling blocks or obstacles to one another.

Mimetic Desire: A desire that is caused and/or intensified by the desire of another person for the same thing.

Thank you to Barbara White for stepping up to help.
