Happy New Year! 新年快乐! We hope this email finds you well. During January, the VBCI Team worked hard to prepare for upcoming events in February and the year ahead. VBCI will offer the Chinese language and culture workshop with Chinese New Year being the topic and it is free for VU students, staff and alumni. Also, the first class of the Chinese Language and Culture Program will take place in February. Registration for the first HSK Test of 2022 will open on 7 February.

Free Chinese Language and Culture Workshop: Things You Need to Know About Chinese New Year
 
Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is one of the biggest cultural events in Chinese culture. And it is right around the corner!

The VBCI team is keen to provide an interactive and engaging one-hour workshop session free for current VU students, staff and alumni. It explores the historical background of CNY traditions, activities, as well as cultural icons. In addition, some engaging activities and cultural comparisons between CNY and Christmas, the two biggest festivals in Chinese and Western cultures will be introduced to the audience, in order to develop an understanding of Chinese culture.

Register for the workshop and be ready to embrace the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations! Registration closes at 3.00 PM 7 February. More information.

Time: 6:00-7:00 pm, Wednesday, 9 February 2022
Access: The workshop will be delivered via zoom.

 
 
2022 HSK Test Schedule



The first HSK Test of 2022 will be conducted on 26 March. Registration will be open on 7 February and close on 27 February.

The tests will be conducted in compliance with the Victoria University COVIDSafe protocol. If changed conditions occur, we may need to postpone the above test dates.

2022 Chinese Language Units

VBCI will be offering three Chinese Language Units including Basic Chinese 1, Basic Chinese 2 and Business Chinese 1 to commence in February. They are the non-award units that provide participants with a good opportunity to learn Mandarin Chinese, focusing on developing communication skills (i.e., Chinese listening and speaking skills). In addition, basic Chinese characters and sentence structures are taught as well. Among the three units, Basic Chinese 1 and Basic Chinese 2 are designed for general Chinese language purposes, while the unit Business Chinese 1 is aimed at the Chinese language in business contexts.

Students enrolled in any of these courses will also be able to enjoy all Chinese language and cultural workshops as well as activities provided by VBCI in 2022 for free.

Teaching Schedule: 21 February-22 May 2022
There are 13 sessions in total for each unit, including 12 teaching sessions and 1 assessment session. Each session lasts for 1.5 hours.

Basic Chinese 1: 17:00-18:30 (every Tuesday)
Basic Chinese 2: 17:00-18:30 (every Wednesday)
Business Chinese 1: 17:00-18:30 (every Thursday)

To provide you with a better idea about the 3 units, 2 free information sessions will be hosted via zoom in February. Please find more details in the interest form and tick the session you prefer when completing the form.

Business Training Program

VBCI provides tailored Mandarin and Chinese business culture training for business organisations and communities. If you want your team to understand more about Chinese business culture and speak some basic Mandarin phrases, this training program is what you need.
Upon completion, participants are expected to be able to:
  • receive guests with simple greetings
  • chat with Chinese clients and colleagues on daily topics
  • express some opinions on different topics
  • understand Chinese culture in a business context
  • have a general understanding of the different cultures for North and South China
  • have a brief view of several e-commerce platforms in China.
We can also tailor the program to best fit your needs.
