Why Woman2Warrior is an Obstacle Race

On Saturday, May 28, hundreds of women will transform into warriors at Woman2Warrior Calgary. They will traverse obstacles that will test their strength, agility, balance and sense of adventure. It will be the second year the five-kilometre obstacle race will take place in the city, and the event will benefit Easter Seals Alberta and Children’s Hospital Aid Society. But why is it an obstacle race?

Susan Boivin, CEO of Easter Seals Alberta says “Funds raised at this event go towards the provision of mobility equipment and summer camp programs for people with disabilities and medical conditions in our province.” These summer camp programs take place at Easter Seals Camp Horizon, a facility in Kananaskis Country. Each year, 1,200 children and adults with disabilities or medical conditions attend.

Linda Firlotte, fund development professional at Easter Seals Alberta has a daughter who is a camper at Easter Seals Camp Horizon, and says that her daughter, Lindsay, “would rather come [to the camp] than go almost anywhere else.” She adds that for many of the kids who go to the camp, their friends are at there – rather than at school, for example.

At Easter Seals Camp Horizon, children in wheelchairs tackle the high ropes course. They go white water rafting. A child with cerebral palsy can swing on a giant swing or climb a climbing wall. “We have adapted everything on site so that every child or adult who comes here can do every activity that a typical kid could do,” says Firlotte. “Some of the kids with disabilities have done things that I’ve never done.”

So, much like Easter Seals Camp Horizon challenges campers, Woman2Warrior pushes women’s boundaries and helps them step out of their comfort zone. There is a warrior in the heart of every woman, and on May 28, she can discover it.
