Welcome October! I love October. It is by far my favorite month overall. I love the cool temperatures, colorful leaves, large orange pumpkins, and the smell of wood smoke from the chimneys in the neighborhood. I love the chill in the air and the gentle reminder that winter is just around the corner. I love the decorations and the food. There is just something so satisfying about the smell of pumpkin muffins baking in the oven while I dig out my heavy winter sweaters and store my shorts and flip-flops for another day.

TRICK OR TREAT
Ten friends all got together for a night of trick-or-treating and pranks. By the end of the evening one friend had been picked up by local law enforcement for egging the math teachers home, one had eaten so much candy they ended up sick, and one friend was bitten by a bat and had to get rabies shots. Use the clues presented all month to figure out which friend was arrested, which got sick, and which was bitten by a bat.
Daniel came dressed as a ghost while Ella was dressed as a witch
Ron who looked very cool in his Skeleton costume was not bitten by a bat
Ernie decided on a Wolfman costume and managed to avoid being arrested
Jason arrived with Sally and neither ate the candy they collected

Cheesy Shrimp Chowder
The following recipe is a guide. I'm a dump and taste sort of cook so the quantities of each ingredient changes with my mood but this recipe will give you a place to start.
1 stick butter
½ chopped onion (or more if you like onion)
3-4 cloves garlic, chopped
6 cups peeled and diced potato (frozen hash browns work as well)
2 lbs. cooked shrimp (any size)
32 oz. chicken broth (can use part chicken broth and part water if preferred)
Spices: amounts can be adjusted to accommodate taste.
¼ tsp. chili powder
¼ tsp. cayenne pepper
¼ tsp. ground cumin
¼ tsp. coriander
½ tsp. nutmeg
½ tsp. paprika
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. white pepper
Melt butter in heavy pan. Sauté onion and garlic. Add potatoes and shrimp.
Cover with chicken broth (just enough to boil potatoes). Add spices.
Boil until potatoes are tender; the time will vary depending on the size of potato cubes.
While potatoes are boiling, use a separate pan to make cheese sauce.
1 stick butter
4 oz. cream cheese (1 small or ½ large pkg.)
1 cup heavy cream
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (do not use non or low fat)
2 cups grated Parmesan cheese (or 1 cup Parmesan and 1 cup Romano)
Melt butter in pan over medium heat. Add cream cheese. Stir until melted. Add cream. Add cheese a little at a time.
After potatoes are tender, slowly fold cheese sauce into base. Stir constantly until well blended.
