5th Annual report
Annual Report of
Sophie's Fund,

for the year ending 31st December 2018
Latest news from Sophie's Fund -
  • In January we received the first very generous donation from Wellington Rotary Club, towards Shalini's fees at campus Rangers Club.
  • In August we were very happy to agree to Fund Susanna at Cilantro Culinary Academy,  to study for a Diploma in Food Preparation & cooking
  • In October Jojo decided that she, together with her friend Allie, would enter for the Devizes to Westminster canoe race, to raise money for Sophie's Fund, this consists of 125 mile course with 90 portages, taking place over 3 days at Easter 2019.
  • We continue to receive very generous support in the form of Standing Orders, and other single donations.
  • We are very pleased that since Sophie's Fund was set up, we have been able to "invest" over £55,000 in the Home of Peace, supporting Justine, and her lovely girls.
Thank you everyone who has made this possible.
Some of the things that we have been able to do for the Home of Peace in 2018
We have continued to fund Alice as Home of Peace full time teacher.

In August we were very happy to agree to Fund Susanna at Cilantro Culinary Academy,  to study for a Diploma in Food Preparation & cooking

We have funded Shalini to complete her iGCS'e at Campus Rangers College, and have received the following letter from her -
"My results consist of 3 As, 3Bs and a C. I'm quite happy about it seeing that previously during the school exams, I wasn't able to reach that high of a grade. Could I have done better? In all honesty, yes way better. My B's were at the peak of getting an A. With a slight push I could have scored at least 6 As. As for maths I'm very glad I actually passed. I used to fail it all the time. I'm not very mathematically inclined hence the bad grades. The teachers at Campus Rangers were always a great help. They pushed and pushed even when it seemed like there was no hope left.
I've always dreamed of going to college. It's not just a dream, it's a goal. I need to go to college. I need to further my studies. At first without the help of the sponsorship, my plan was to finish school and work to earn enough to pay my college fees. But now because of being sponsored by Sophie’s Fund and The Rotary International, I'm able to at least apply for another sponsorship to make it for College. My goal isn't only for me to be able to go to college but for everyone else like me to be able to achieve their dreams. With my achievements, I hope I can encourage other sponsors to help kids like me.
As for my ambition, well I haven't really made up my mind. I am extremely passionate about writing. It's something I love. That is why I've decided to major in journalism. Another thing I love is helping kids like me to be able to achieve their goals. I know what it's like to be without hope, and I want others to live in a world of hope. So, my ambition? It's to write.
I would not have been able to come this far (I am the first in my family who now has a chance to further my studies!!) if I was not helped along the way – Home of Peace took on the awesome job of taking care of me and standing by me, making sure that School was the priority and going all out to secure sponsorship so I could complete my Schooling. I cannot thank Sophie’s Fund for agreeing to help me in paying my Fees and The Rotary International for their role in paying for my fees too.
Thank you.

Future plans – what we are proposing:
  • We will continue to Fund Alice, the Teacher, for the next 12 months, hopefully longer.
  • We will continue to Fund Field Trips and other activities, which we feel will contribute to the girls education and welfare

Financial commitment:

We are currently committed to an outlay of £1300.00 per month for 2019
Financial Statement:

“The trustees have once again asked me to review the income, expenditure, and financial position of Sophie's Fund, as someone independent of it, and to give an opinion as to their accuracy.

I have experience in this area, but have done this in a personal capacity as a supporter of the Fund, and not a professional one, and on this basis, in my opinion the figures as stated are accurate."
