June 2019

Congratulations, everyone, on another successful DVMTA year!  As we entered the second half of the year, two big questions were looming.  Would Cavalcade be able to act as a fund-raiser as it had been set up to do in the past with the increased cost of running the event?  Would Awards in Excellence be able to continue funding winners at the same level?  I am happy to report - Yes! and Yes!  A combination of increased fees, additional fund-raising efforts, careful event planning, generous business partners and member support all worked together to keep the organization financially stable.  You all deserve a pat on the back for encouraging your students to participate in our events.  Not only is student participation vital to the success of our organization, but the events we offer (Marathon, Original Composition Festival, Cavalcade of Rhythm, Awards in Excellence, Achievement Day and Awards Plus) are all vital means of promoting students’ musical growth in ways that cannot be achieved solely within our individual studios!  Keeping our organization strong benefits everyone!
Now, as we settle into the summer months, I hope you all have plans that involve some well-deserved rest and relaxation!  I also hope you have a chance to think about how being a member of DVMTA can benefit you and your students in the coming school year.  Perhaps one goal can be to enter one or two students in an event that you haven’t tried before – just to get your feet wet!  Another goal may be to talk to some members you don’t know as well to form some new connections at the August brunch.  I have learned tons just talking member to member!  How about arranging to visit other members’ studios occasionally throughout the year to gain some new ideas and perspective?  General meetings are always chock full of sage advice and practical instruction that help us all to be the best teachers that we can be, so you can make an effort to attend as many as possible.  DVMTA is here for you as a tremendous support to your music studio.  If you are not already doing so, plan on taking advantage of all that DVMTA has to offer in the coming year!  In the meantime, have a great summer!  I look forward to seeing you all at the August Brunch!
Summer Song Challenge
By now, you have probably already gotten your interested students busy collecting pledges and learning pieces for our new Summer Song Challenge.  If not, it is not too late!  This event works for everyone - continuing teachers and students as well as teachers and students who take the summers off!  Students simply ask family and friends for pledges ($2 - $3 per piece suggested), learn as many pieces as possible from June 1st to around August 15th, have teachers approve pieces and collect pledge amounts in time for teachers to turn in funds by September 10th. (Note:  An idea suggested for students or teachers who take the summer off – Have students send you a video of themselves performing their pieces as they learn them.  This will keep you from spending a lot of lesson time in the fall listening to all of the pieces learned!)  ALL students who learn at least 5 pieces will receive a prize and the top money collector from each participating studio will also receive a prize!  All remaining proceeds will be placed in the Student Awards Fund.  Teacher information, a parent letter and a student pledge sheet can be downloaded from the website -  Go to Events – General Documents and you will find a Summer Song Challenge file.  I hope you will participate in this fun, easy event which will keep your students playing this summer while helping to continue funding our wonderful DVMTA events!
Looking for students?
Long-time member, Beth Christensen, is moving this summer and has about 20 students in need of a teacher.  If you live in the vicinity of Elliot and Higley and are looking to expand your studio, please contact Beth at as soon as possible!
Next General Meeting – August Brunch, August 16th
Come to the August Brunch to see what we have in store for you in the coming year!  The brunch will take place on Friday, August 16th at 9:30 am at the LDS Church 1483 N. We look forward to being together again at the August Brunch!

A HUGE “Thank You!” to everyone who helped make Achievement Day 2018 a success.  We had 175 students registered from 21 different studios.  Three teachers entered students for the first time.  We had students participating in levels all the way up to Level 10!
I’d like to thank all of you who have taken time to prepare your students and given them a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate all that they have learned this year!  I’d also like to thank all of you volunteered your time to assure that the event had adequate coverage on Saturday in order to take place!   I’d also like to thank my co-chairs, Lori Weidemann & Lisa Wallace, who helped me as we moved the event back to the MCC Music Building and several other behind the scenes preparations!  This event truly demonstrates what can be accomplished if we all pitch in and work together to make it happen!
For those of you who have not yet tried Achievement Day, think seriously about entering a few students next year.  Although it takes time and requires you to teach certain objectives, it provides a true sense of accomplishment to the student and to the teacher as well!
Our Awards Plus recognition night was held Monday, May 13 at Legacy Retirement Residence. We had one Awards in Excellence winner who needed to perform and he did a wonderful job. The following Devoted Performers were recognized:

Ethan LoCascio - student of Karen Garlington
Cayden, Kayla, and Devrin Wilson, and Aubrey Michaels - students of Lori Weidemann
Connor and Shane Brinson, MaKenna Cunningham, and Ginny Wilson - students of Claire Westlake

The Senior Scholarship recipient was Courtney Walker. She was recognized by her teacher and mom, Joni Walker.

Awards Plus is a way to reward those students who have fully participated in what DVMTA has to offer. Many thanks to their parents for supporting them, as well as to their teachers for preparing them and keeping track of their progress. If you haven’t already done so, please take the time to record all the events your students participated in this year. You may not be planning to have a Devoted Performer right now, but you may surprise yourself and need that record later on. One suggested tracking form is available on our website, or you can set up any simple spreadsheet. If you have questions about Awards Plus, please contact Carolyn Eldredge.
