March 2018

Happy Spring to you! Welcome to March, the month of Spring Break and perfect Valley weather! What a great time to catch your breath and prepare for the end of the year performance adventures.

Thank you to Nicci Lovell for her wonderful ideas for networking and marketing at the February General Meeting. She shared excellent suggestions and online resources to help us promote ourselves, our studios and our profession. We have such amazing DVMTA members with so many gifts and abilities, thank you for sharing!

Cavalcade of Rhythm was simply wonderful! The music was so fun; my students just loved all their pieces. The entertainment was exceptional with Jimbo the Circus Performer, our very own Ringmaster, Charles Newton, and of course, our DVMTA students. It was exciting and fabulous, and I can’t give enough thanks to our Cavalcade Committee: Hollie Lunt, Joni Walker, Kelli Riding, Heidi Morris and Charles Newton. No detail was left undone, and so many thanks are given to all DVMTA members for your help to support this wonderful event.

Our upcoming events include Awards in Excellence, Achievement Day and our Devoted Performer and Senior Scholar Recognition evening. What a great way to finish up our year. With the adventures of the Winter Olympics fresh in our minds, many lessons and experiences of amazing athletes can be applied by our students to prepare for the rigors and stress of the end of year events, performances and recitals. One of the most famous Olympians ever, Jesse Owens, said, “We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort.” And it takes amazing teachers and mentors to inspire the dream and give the tools to help students achieve their very best. What wonderful opportunities and adventures for us all as we strive for excellence!

-Shannon Payne, DVMTA President

General Meetings:
Please note the General Meeting is not the last Friday of the month in March.

March’s General meeting on Friday, March 23rd will be presented by Corinne Walker, “Using your Speaking and Singing Voice in the Studio”.  We look forward to receiving instruction and helpful tips for speaking and singing in our piano studios.

Add your voice to your piano teaching tool kit!
Corinne Walker, Master degree in Vocal Performance, is a private voice teacher who will help you with your voice.

1. Do you get hoarse after a long day of teaching?

DVMTA Executive Officer Nominations:
It is the time of year where we begin to prepare for new DVMTA leadership. At the February General Meeting the following were nominated for DVMTA Executive Officer positions for 2018-2020:
    Carolyn Rooder: President
    Hollie Lunt: Vice-President
    Joni Walker: Treasurer
    Kelli Riding: Secretary

According to DVMTA by-laws, nominations for executive officers remain open until the vote at the March General Meeting. This means that if there is anyone else who wishes to make a nomination for any of these positions they may do so until March 23rd. In order to make a nomination the person being nominated must give their consent prior to being nominated.

The vote will take place at the General Meeting on March 23rd. We must have at least a third of our DVMTA Members present in order to vote, so please plan on attending this very important meeting to give your support for our new Executive Officers.

Awards in Excellence:
We are excited for Awards in Excellence Auditions Sat. April 14th, and the Winners’ Recital Sat. April 21st at AZ Piano. Please contact Alayne Favreau with any questions. Even if you don’t have students participating we invite you to attend one of the Winner’s Recitals at 1:30 or 2:45 p.m. on April 21st and celebrate the amazing accomplishments of these dedicated DVMTA students and teachers.

Cavalcade Video Contest:
Thank you so much to Claire Westlake and Nicci Lovell for organizing and promoting the Cavalcade Video Contest on Facebook and Instagram. Some amazing students shared some amazing performances of their Cavalcade duet pieces! Prizes were awarded for the most likes and shares.

Achievement Day 2018 at MCC Performing Arts Center– Time to Register!

You’ve been squeezing in those extra skills and you’ve been selecting repertoire.  Now, it’s time to get registered for the big event – Achievement Day!  Registration is due on March 30th.  Registration forms are on our website under Documents. The form can be mailed or emailed to me or they can be turned in at the March meeting on March 23rd.   Fill out the form completely and make note of any special requests: a particular area you’d like to volunteer in, a student with a specific time need, etc.  We will do our best to honor any requests.   In our alternate venue, we may need more help guiding people around the building, so please list any high-schoolers willing to do volunteer service hours on the back of the form.

Remember to specify standard or expanded requirements for each student. Fees are $5 and $8 (note the increase from $7 in the past), and the requirements and awards are spelled out in the registration packet.  Also, please note that expanded students may choose either sight-reading OR ear-training as their required option, so make sure you register them for one or both of these options!  It is recommended that you register students for an extra option, as well, in case an option is failed, so that students satisfy the necessary requirements.

Trophies are ordered based on the registration forms, so please either print or type the names and levels clearly.  Double-check the spelling of student names.

Teachers will receive a packet at the April Brunch with their teacher number, name tags with times, green option sheets and their volunteer assignment for the morning. Teachers are responsible for printing evaluation forms for their own students from our website. Please don’t forget the duet or original composition evaluation forms if your students are participating in those categories.  If you need help with this or cannot print the forms, please make a note of it when you register and I will include hard copies you can duplicate. If you cannot attend the April Brunch, you will need to pick up your packet from my house.

I encourage everyone to take advantage of participating in this great event!  It is such a nice way to celebrate the year’s progress!  If you have any questions or concerns, please email – Carolyn Rooder carolynrooder@gmail.com

Awards Plus registrations are due at our next general meeting on March 23. Forms are available at dvmta.org. All events are double-checked, so please be as specific as possible about the events your students have participated in. Senior Scholars also need to turn in a personal letter to the committee and may include recommendations from other teachers or music directors. If you have any questions, please contact Lorri McHardy.
