Our first 2021 theme will be "Awe"
January: Awe
“One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day.” Albert Einstein
“If you think of feelings you have when you are awed by something - for example, knowing that elements in your body trace to exploded stars - I call that a spiritual reaction, speaking of awe and majesty, where words fail you.”
Neil deGrasse Tyson
We start the year by looking back, in Awe, at what the year behind us has wrought, and looking ahead, with Awe, to what possibilities the year ahead of us holds. Join us on Sundays at 10:00 a.m. for these conversations.

Awe, When Contemplated...Transforms
"What is sacred is what is worthy of our reverence, what evokes awe and wonder in the human heart, and what, when contemplated, transforms us utterly."
Phil Cousineau

January 10th - Rev. Dick Hood
Finding Awe - a personal story
We usually associate awe with looking to the heavens. Perhaps we've been looking in the wrong place.

This Week’s Contemplative Meditation Theme
Until we can gather again here are some thoughts for your meditation time at home:

"Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field.
I’ll meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase ‘each other’ doesn’t make any sense." RUMI

January 4th: "The Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom," Jonathan Haidt
Jonathan Haidt skillfully combines two genres-philosophical wisdom and scientific research-delighting the reader with surprising insights. He explains, for example, why we have such difficulty controlling ourselves and sticking to our plans; why no achievement brings lasting happiness, yet a few changes in your life can have profound effects, and why even confirmed atheists experience spiritual elevation. In a stunning final chapter, Haidt addresses the grand question "How can I live a meaningful life?," offering an original answer that draws on the rich inspiration of both philosophy and science.
