What Are The Best Questions?

As Unitarian Universalists we love the questions, sometimes more than the answers. It can even be a form of mental illness. But what are the best questions? How do we narrow our focus to the most important interplay between questions and answers? Do our questions bring us to a place of calm and confidence that might empower us to move forward? Or do our questions jangle our nerves and leave us feeling like nothing we do will make any difference? And finally does the process work better some days than others? Dare we dream a cool, calm confidence?

Extinguishing the Chalice
    We extinguish this flame but not the light of truth,
    the warmth of community, or the fire of commitment.
   These we carry in our hearts until we are together again.

"True religion is the life we live, not the creed we profess." - Louis Nizer

For many of us this is why we joined the UUC of the Low Country. We truly believe that it is the life we live that is so important.  Day in and day out, we do our part to make the world a better place for many.  We do it because it makes us feel better, but more importantly we do it because it is the right thing to do.  It is the life we live.

As many of you are aware, UUCL Members Scott and Lisa Lemen contracted COVID19 in August.  They followed doctor's guidelines, quarantined and after 3 weeks they thought they were out of the woods.  Unfortunately, Lisa started to have some serious post COVID complications.  Their journey brought them to Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, where they have stayed the past many weeks.  Well, the good news is that at this time Lisa is "out of the woods" and they are hoping to return home within the week.

What follows is a note from Scott and Lisa Lemen.

Dear Friends,

Thank you all for the get-well wishes and kind words sent our way.  We are so grateful for the support during this difficult time.  We are both feeling better and looking forward to seeing everyone at services when it is possible to meet in person again.

Kindest regards,
Scott & Lisa Lemen

This Week’s Contemplative Meditation Theme

 Until we can gather again here are some thoughts for your meditation time at home:

"Science and spirituality, far from being mutually exclusive and conflicting elements, are complementary partners in the search for the path that can enable humanity to recover its oneness with the world. Science demonstrates the urgent and objective need for it; and spirituality testifies to its inherent value and supreme desirability.”
― Alexis Karpouzos, The self-criticism of science: The contemporary philosophy of science & the problem of the scientific consciousness.

Would you like to help with the Sunday Live Streamed services?  Maybe ring the gong or light the chalice?

‘Joys and Sorrows’ Returns to UUCL

You have missed the connection of hearing each other’s joys, concerns and sorrows, and we heard you. In this time of virtual services, we have devised a way to make it happen.

To send in your joys and sorrows, milestones and concerns to the church at,  please use the format for sharing attached below.  There will be a ‘Sharing Circle’ ZOOM meeting on the fourth (4th) Sunday of each month (as long as we have a Live Streamed service).  The 'Sharing Circle' will be held after the service and begin at approximately 11:00a.m. This will be in place of the Talk-Back.  You may participate in the sharing, or simply ask to have your Joy/Sorrow read at that time.

The first 'Sharing Circle' will be held on Sunday, October 25th. If you wish to be part of that ZOOM meeting, please send your email address to Cheryl Kanuck at Written/emailed joys and sorrows will be read at those meetings  upon request of the sender. Any requests for privacy and discretion during the reading will be honored.

We will monitor these efforts, and welcome your feedback as you participate, so that things may be modified as needed. Thank you for your patience as we all adjust to this ever-lengthening pandemic.

The Seven Principles of Unitarian Universalism

We Believe in and affirm in:

  • The Inherent worth and dignity of every person
  • Justice, equity and compassion in human relations
  • Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations
  • A free and responsible search for truth and meaning
  • The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregation and in society at large
  • The goal of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all
  • Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part

These are the six sources of wisdom our congregations affirm and promote:

  • Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life;
  • Words and deeds of prophetic people which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love;
  • Wisdom from the world's religions which inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life;
  • Jewish and Christian teachings which call us to respond to God's love by loving our neighbors as ourselves;
  • Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science, and warn us against idolatries of the mind and spirit;
  • Spiritual teachings of Earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.
