From our Minister Emeritus
Rev. Manuel Holland

I wish to express gratitude to those who set up the Ron Titus Fund.  Olive and I could not attend the memorial service, however we were able to send a small donation to the fund.  In doing so we expressed our deep gratitude for Ron's friendship, his wisdom and his joy of living.  Also in giving to the fund we wanted to express our love and concern for Donna and all the members of the Titus Family and our hope that healing is beginning.  I hope that there will be many donations to the Ron Titus Fund.

UPDATED 1.24.19

Dear UUCL Members and Friends,

The Titus family thanks you for the outpouring of love for Ron and the family.  The service last weekend could not have taken place without a the huge group of helpers and volunteers who worked on Sanctuary Chairs and Setup, Refreshments, Parking, Set Up for the Family Dinner, Grounds cleanup and Sunday Morning Clean-up before service.  We also wish to thank all who donated and continue to donate to the Ron Titus Memorial Fund.

THIS SATURDAY NIGHT!

Joe Crookston – Saturday, January 26, 2019

Songwriter, guitarist, painter, fiddler, slide player, eco-village member and believer in all things possible. Named 2016 Folk Alliance International Artist-in- Resident, he’s played with Suzanne Vega, Dar Williams, David Francey, John McCutcheon, John Gorka, Judy Collins and 100’s more. His songs are cinematic and are being made into award winning films.
He’ll surprise you and awaken the cynics.   He’s plumbing for lyrical gold like a social archeologist.  His songs are universal, his rhythm infectious and in concert, he is funny as hell one moment and transcendent the next.

HE BELIEVES IN STORIES

Come to a show. Mystical and humorous roads, twisting through vivid cinematography.  Like short 4:00 films. Visual, artful and human. Brooklyn in July, Oklahoma towns, rattlesnake tails, turbary thieves, Galway heather, meter maids and drunken roosters. At the end of the night, you’ll leave inspired.  “The Long Note” is a phrase in Irish culture.”The Long Note” is that place of resonance and transcendence where the music, the voices, the instruments, and the community ALL come together and unite.

THERE IS A LONG NOTE & JOE IS REACHING FOR IT

Whether he’s picking his 48 Gibson, weaving through lap slide songs or looping his fiddle, he will draw you in.  It happens every time.  Watch a YouTube video. It’s good, but it’s not the same. You gotta come to a show.  With unwavering courage to be himself, he is literate, poignant and funny as hell.   Joe lives in Ithaca NY, and tours regularly in the US, Ireland and Canada.  http://www.joecrookston.com

Our February 2019 theme is Challenges:

Life is a series of challenges because it is a succession of changes --- changes and challenges are linked.  Common wisdom tells us that facing and overcoming life’s challenges is how we grow in strength and character.

Our country too faces challenges in many spheres --- the environment, racism, and healthcare, to name but a few.  The Dalai Lama says “To remain indifferent to the challenges we face is indefensible. If the goal is noble, whether or not it is realized within our lifetime is largely irrelevant. What we must do therefore is to strive and persevere and never give up.”

Whether personal, national, or global, challenges are a fact of human life.  Join us this month to hear our speakers on this topic, and to be part of the discussion circle following the service.

"Babies and Bathwater"

Our Unitarian Universalist faith today is much different from the past.  Our values, our practices, and even our structure are different. We have shed much of our tradition and the wisdom of times gone by.  Have we lost something?  Have we thrown the baby out with the bath water?

UUA Proposed Congregational Study/Action Issue: Democracy Uncorrupted

Folks,
Below is the link for the CSAI: Democracy Uncorrupted. This was voted on at the UUA General Assembly last summer. Please review it.
On January 27 we as a congregation will vote on whether our congregation supports having this issue placed in the ballot for the 2019 UUA General Assembly.  (We will have our Congregational Meeting in February once Jim Morrison is back.)
The content of the proposal is not controversial to us. In fact we are already working on some of these issues through Indivisible and the League of Women Voters.  The issues range from universal voting rights to freedom of speech, an independent judicial system, to freedom from influence of foreign powers.

Mary Connor (left) operates the Bluffton-based Three Sisters Farm with her sisters Priscilla and Beth. The sisters grow 60 to 100 different varieties of flowers and about 100 varieties of USDA certified organic vegetables, fruit, and herbs.
