Rev. Pat Jobe

"Attention, What A Price To Pay"

Rev. Pat Jobe returns to ask us unto what are we paying attention? Are we burdened by news reports of horrors? Are we light and free when we see a dew drop clinging to a blade of grass? How do we balance the social conscious of Clara Barton against the mystic blue persuasion of William Blake?

Please Note:  There will be a discussion group with Pat after the service where we will discuss the topic of the day.
This service will be Live Streamed on our Facebook page beginning just before 10:00 a.m. The service will also be saved to our Facebook page and can be viewed at a later time or date if needed.

Interim Pastoral Minister
Rev. Charlie Tyler

Charlie Tyler has agreed to serve as our interim pastoral minister.  Charlie’s telephone number is 803-473-6048.  You can call him to schedule an appointment for pastoral counseling. Please be mindful that Charlie is the chaplain for Hospice of the Lowcountry, a full-time job.  He is not able to engage in lengthy telephone conversations when he is working.

Our Minister Emeritus
Rev. Manuel Holland

LOVING THOUGHTS ABOUT OLIVE
Olive started receiving care from Hospice Care of the Lowcountry the first of July.  We chose HCL because we have been one of its supporters since its beginning and because of its fine professional staff, including its Chaplain, Rev. Charlie Tyler.

Olive and I moved to Hilton Head in 1982.  Many of us remember over the years since then how involved as a volunteer Olive became in church and community activities.  She played the piano to accompany our hymn singing until we hired John Sheppard about ten years ago.  She did our newsletter and Sunday bulletin for many years.  When the Martin Luther King Planning Committee decided to have Fifth Saturday community  service work projects Olive volunteered to manage the preparation of breakfast for the volunteers who met at All Saints Episcopal Church to be assigned to a work project.  For many years on fifth Saturdays we arrived at the church at 6:00 AM to prepare for the breakfast.

Those are only a few of  Olive’s contributions as a volunteer,   I hope to highlight others at another time.  For now, however, permit me to say a few words about Olive’s background for those among us who have not known her.

Olive was born in Providence, Rhode Island on October 2, 1928.  She received a BA degree in History and Political Science from the University of  Rhode  Island. Later she received an MA degree in Religious Education from Andover-Newton Theological School.  Much later Olive received an MA degree in Education Administration from Winthrop University.   Among positions held over the years two stand out.  For seven years Olive was Religious Education Director at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist in Framingham, Massachusetts.  For eleven years she was employed by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg  School District, first as a teacher in the program for academically gifted children and then as an assistant principal.

Each day we are grateful for the compassionate care Olive is receiving and it is obvious that her quality of life is improving.   I will keep you posted.

Peace, Manuel

Our July Theme is Mindfulness:

Mindfulness means being awake. The best way to capture moments is to pay attention. It means knowing what you are doing.  Mindfulness practice means that we commit fully in each moment to be present; inviting ourselves to BE with this moment in full awareness, with the intention to embody as best we can an orientation of calmness, mindfulness, and equanimity right here and right now.
                                                     Jon Kabat-Zinn

Our August theme will be Openness

What the world needs most is Openness: Open hearts, open doors, open eyes, open minds, open ears, open souls.
~ Robert Muller

Openness, respect, integrity - these are principles that need to underpin pretty much every other decision that you make.~ Justin Trudeau

Just knowing you don't have the answers is a recipe for humility, openness, acceptance, forgiveness, and an eagerness to learn.~ Dick Van Dyke

Join us in August to Open your mind to new ideas and renewed curiosity.

-  Palmetto Plant Eaters - will host Megyn Jefferson of Morsel (formerly Flux Nourishment) as its guest speaker on Wednesday, August 7th at 6:30pm. She will discuss the challenges of making the healthy choice the easy choice, why Morsel was created, and how Morsel can serve you. Learn more at https://morselmeals.com

As a small child Megyn found a love for food alongside her father and grandparents who owned and operated restaurants throughout her childhood. Despite her interest in food, she avoided a career in food and beverage in an effort to adhere to the advice of her family. After using food as medicine to combat various chronic health issues in her early twenties, she pursued a health coaching certification from The Institute for Integrative Nutrition where she studied a variety of dietary theories and practical lifestyle coaching methods. She served over one hundred clients in the span of 2 years and realized many individuals needed an affordable and nutrient-dense meal service. Morsel has been a labor of love and it is her greatest pleasure to put her passion for healing through food on your doorstep.
