 Rev. Pat Jobe
Visioning In The Time Of Pandemic

Never doubt the power of a vision. Rev. Jobe returns to us via video for a vision check. He's not an eye doctor, but he believes deeply in the power of how we see things. He will give us his vision for moving forward as a congregation and as us about ours. If you want to send him an email in preparation for the sermon, he's at He wants to know about your vision for UUCL

Pastoral Minister
Rev. Charlie Tyler

Charlie’s telephone number is 803-473-6048.  You can call him to schedule an appointment for pastoral counseling. Please be mindful that Charlie is the chaplain for Hospice of the Lowcountry, a full-time job.  He is not able to engage in lengthy telephone conversations when he is working.

Bill Newby
Eight Minutes and Forty-Six Seconds
In memory of George Floyd (1973-2020)

Eight minutes and forty-six seconds
is enough time to unload a dishwasher,
walk around the block,
say your vows, kiss your bride
and walk up the aisle.

It’s sufficient
for deciding what’s right and wrong,
asking for a breath,
speaking to your mother,
and changing your mind.

In this span one can light a fire,
acknowledge systemic racism,
recite the names of victims,
and decide that enough is enough.

During the ticking we can remember
that America is a fragile idea,
peaceful protest is a right,
police are not above the law,
and empathy knits communities together
while only bullies seek to dominate.

There’s room in eight minutes and forty-six seconds
to tell a complex story,
decide that the future must be better,
and start to make that happen.

The Freedom to Pursue Your Truth

Our fourth principle is a distinguishing character of our faith, and possibly it's strongest attraction. We encourage and support each other in the free pursuit of truth and meaning; each of us is called to be a theologian, and to define what is true for us, with no creed binding us to one way of seeing the world. This Sunday we'll talk about about this precious aspect of being UU and what it means in today's world.

Staying Connected During Covid-19
We miss each other.  We miss the smiles and the hugs!  We miss the sense of community that attending UUCL on Sundays adds to our lives.  Staying connected is a challenge these days.  But there is a solution!

We invite those of you who wish to send in a picture of yourself and what you’re doing during the pandemic.  Or a picture and a few words to your fellow UU’s.  Don’t worry if you need a haircut!  We love you no matter what you look like!

Let us know how you’re doing – share a Joy or a Sorrow.  We care!
A few of the photos will be included each week. David starts putting the newsletter together on Tuesdays, so get your submission in early.  Send to:

Lets take a moment to catch up with Cheryl McCarthy:

Coming up to 11 weeks not working (or not working to capacity as I've seen a few patients last week and the week before) is disconcerting! I've put in all of the precautions (masks, glasses, temperature, O2 levels, waterproof sheets, air purifier to name a few) and I hope to attract my regulars back and some new patients. I've been busy gardening, kayaking, cooking, walking and hanging with Zen and Pax (two greyhounds, one we're fostering).

This Week’s Contemplative Meditation Theme
Until we can gather again here are some thoughts for your meditation time at home:

Two thoughts this week:
(1) Check out a 2019 TV 4-Episode Series called INNER WORLDS, OUTER WORLDS on Gaia TV (Gaia has a Free 7-Day Trial via Amazon Prime Video) Each episode is about 30 minutes. Extensive information and beautifully illustrated. Enjoy!

(2) “Meditation is like going to the bottom of the sea, where everything is calm and tranquil. On the surface of the sea there may be a multitude of waves but the sea is not affected below. In its deepest depths, the sea is all silence. When we start meditating, first we try to reach our own inner existence, our true existence- that is to say, the bottom of the sea. Then when the waves come from the outside world, we are not affected. Fear, doubt, worry and all the earthly turmoils just wash away, because inside us is solid peace. Thoughts cannot touch us, because our mind is all peace, all silence, all oneness. Like fish in the sea, they jump and swim but leave no mark. When we are in our highest meditation, we feel that we are the sea, and the animals in the sea cannot affect us. We feel that we are the sky, and all the birds flying past cannot affect us. Our mind is the sky and our heart is the infinite sea. This is meditation.”
