Leaders and Healers

Phil Howell
I have had the pleasure this week of working with various groups of students as they resolved conflicts together. Sitting face-to-face, some students have addressed hurt feelings, others have cleared up misunderstandings, and others have remedied situations they felt were unfair. The point of these meetings is not just to straighten out problems; the higher priority is to teach students how to do so on their own.
In these meetings, students talk openly and respectfully, telling each other directly what is bothering them and taking responsibility for how their actions have affected others. They do not pull in bystanders to take their sides, call each other names, or use other negative tactics that are all-too-common. They elevate themselves and each other by being candid and respectful.
I am often humbled by the courage and honesty shown by our students in these conversations. When given the opportunity and security to tackle difficult situations, they do so with grace and maturity. In these moments, I glimpse the leaders and healers they are destined to be.

Finding Solutions – And Mixtures!

Mixtures and Solutions
Team 5 students studied solutions and mixtures this week. As an experiment, they performed chromatography with various markers. Students made dots with the markers on coffee filter strips, then dipped the ends of those strips into water. As the water passed through the marker dot and dried, it revealed whether the marker ink was a solution or a mixture.

Humanities Corner

Team 5 is learning about color theory – primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. Students mixed paint and created 3D color wheels that represent the full spectrum of colors.
