Discovering de Paul

Since mid-summer, I have enjoyed the opportunity to host dozens of parents for tours of our campus. They are inquiring families, visiting to see if The de Paul School might be the school which can right their children’s struggles. Tours typically last 30 minutes, with visits to those classrooms which match their children’s current and next-year grade levels. If the child’s major source of difficulty is reading, then we try to visit as many Language Arts classes as possible. If their child is falling behind due to poor organizational skills, we point out the aspects of each classroom which are explicitly designed to foster independent, self-regulating organization of time, space, and resources.

Following the tour, we meet briefly in my office to process what we have seen and what might best help their children. Here are the three most frequently-cited observations from our guests.
  • The engagement between teachers and students is exceptionally positive, with attention to tasks/activities impressive throughout the day.
  • The school is calm. This level of calmness brings peace to our guests as they walk about campus.
  • It is abundantly clear that our teachers are masters… experts… professionals who are unquestionably passionate about instruction and their students.
We have several more tours scheduled through the end of October. These families are interested in enrollment this year and also next year. I can’t wait to hear their impressions following their walks about our classrooms and campus!

Cuneiform Demonstration

History In The Making

Mr. Dzanko’s Team 6 Social Studies classes have been learning about Ancient Sumer, the world’s first great civilization. Among the Sumerians’ many inventions was cuneiform, the world’s earliest writing system. The students worked all last week on learning and practicing their own cuneiform script. Then they used clay and a chopstick (in place of a stylus) to make their own Sumerian tablets.
