Making Homework Routine

"Since joining The de Paul School's Team 6 this year, we have seen a nice change in our son's homework attitude. He takes the initiative to find a quiet space in the house and then independently completes his assignments. There's no arguing or drama. It's such a welcome change. "
- Carolanne Dries, de Paul Parent
Extended Day
Students complete homework in Extended Day
Prior to coming to The de Paul School, many parents share that homework time is the most problematic and emotional time of their family’s evening. It does not have to be that way, if we work together. Your child’s teachers will teach them how to establish a homework routine including a homework time. Teachers will make sure that the work that comes home is strictly practice.

Parents, we do not want you to feel like you have to teach anything. You can assist your child in the following ways:
  • Consistently reinforce the importance of homework. Consistently reinforce with your child(ren) that homework is nonnegotiable and that it is expected to be done to the best of their ability. Do not provide any excuse for children not to complete an assignment.
  • Assist your child(ren) in setting up a time and place for completing homework. Set aside an hour for written homework, study, or reading every evening, Monday through Thursday. Realize that consistency of time and location are key.
  • Check homework for completion, not accuracy. Each night, review the student’s planner at the beginning of homework time and at the end. Check completed papers and make sure that they are putting them in the correct places. This gives parents an idea as to what is being taught at school and provides opportunities for conversation and praise.
If anything beyond this is necessary or if homework continues to be a stressor, please contact your child’s teacher.

High School Night

On Thursday evening, we celebrated our annual High School Night. Representatives from parochial, independent, and private high schools visited with Team 7 and 8 students and their families, sharing information and answering questions. (Jefferson County Public Schools hold their own showcase on October 28 at the Kentucky Exposition Center.)

High School Night 2
Thank you to all the families and schools who joined us! Schools in attendance included the following: Assumption High School, DeSales High School, Holy Cross High School, Louisville Collegiate School, McCallie School, Mercy Academy, Miss Hall's School, Presentation Academy, Sacred Heart Academy, Trinity High School, St. Francis High School, St. Xavier High School, and Walden School.

Got Library Skills?

In addition to their weekly (Elementary) or bi-weekly (Middle) visits to the library for enrichment and to check out books, Team 3-8 students visit the library once a month to learn technical library skills. This week, Team 3 students learned about the parts of a book (title, table of contents, index, etc.).
Library Skills
If you would like to volunteer in the de Paul library, be it weekly or on occasion, please submit both the Library Volunteer Form and the background check authorization found on our website.
