The Grin of Accomplishment

Braving Our Fears

Our Principal knocked on my office door, accompanied by a young student. Mrs. Stepp asked if I had a few moments, as she and the child had something important to tell and share. The elementary student proceeded to tell me that he long harbored a secret fear: that people would find out that he couldn’t read well.

Mrs. Stepp and the youngster sat down and placed a one-page story upon the table. The child proceeded to read accurately, expressively, and fluently the short story about snowflakes. He self-corrected the two mistakes he made, which is always impressive. He correctly answered two questions to assess his comprehension.

He smiled angelically when Mrs. Stepp declared, “Now you aren’t afraid anymore, are you?”

Team 8 Language Arts

Spelling Practice
Sentence Diagrams
In Langauge Arts class this week, Team 8 began with some spelling practice. Ms. Shea read a word aloud, and the students both wrote out the word on their individual dry erase boards and identified the number of phonemes in the word. In some cases, Ms. Shea then challenged the students to change the word to a different part of speech (i.e., adjective to noun) or to spell the plural form of the word. These variations transformed a rote spelling practice into a fluid conversation about language.

After spelling, the class continued its studies of participial phrases and sentence diagrams. Students wrote examples from their homework on the front board, and the class reviewed these exercises together. The class performed very well, and Ms. Shea encouraged them to respond with the confidence they deserved.

Chihuly Loop
Student Art
Teams 2 and 3 learned about contemporary glass artist Dale Chihuly. Chihuly specializes in the ancient art of glass blowing – heating shards of colored glass until they become soft and lava-like. The glass is then shaped into vases, bowls, and fantastic installation sculptures. In our exploration, we used coffee filters and spray starch to recreate the “Macchia” series that Chihuly created.

Alumni Accomplishments!

Graduation 1
Graduation 2
Over the next few months, we will be constructing an on-campus exhibit of alumni accomplishments to display to our community what The de Paul Difference is all about.

Please send Christina Janisch your pictures of academic and/or occupational achievements! Academically, this includes high school graduation, college acceptance letters, scholarship announcements, and college graduation/diplomas. Occupationally, this includes alums, near and far, at work or volunteering in their community – sharing their talents with the world.
