An Adventure for Avis

Avis was ready to take a break from her cancer and use her wish for an adventure that included travel and Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.  Kellsie’s Hope provided an RV and Avis and her family hit the road.  She and her dad mapped out all of their stops.  Their adventure started in Missouri and they journeyed to Chicago, where the family was treated like royalty by Mike at Smoque Restaurant.  From Chicago, they made their way to Indiana, Detroit, and across the border into Canada.  Avis visited Niagara Falls and New York, where she shopped for 2 days and was treated to a professional photo shoot.  From there, her trip included visits to Harvard, the Hershey Factory in Hershey Pennsylvania, and the Smithsonian Black History Museum in Washington, D.C.  Not only did Avis and her family get great scenery, history, and shopping, they also stopped at many of the Diners, Drive-ins and Dives they had seen on TV.

Avis is a strong young lady who is fighting Rhabdomyosarcoma for the second time. Her strength and love of family was apparent when she spoke at this year’s Kellsie’s Hope Luncheon on Sunday, August 27, 2017.

Wishes like Ava’s are made possible by the donations that you and other Kellsie’s Hope supporters make throughout the year.  Without you, Avis and her family would not have been able to take this fun adventure and forget about all of the challenges that come with fighting cancer.  Thank you for making this possible!!

Celebrate Heroes 5K Comes Home

The 6th Annual Kellsie’s Hope “Celebrate Heroes” 5k was held for the first time in Kellsie’s hometown of Maryville, Illinois!  Over 200 runners and supporters arrived to see Kellsie’s Hope Foundation banners hanging along route 159 and Main Street.  Many individuals shared how awesome it was to see Kellsie’s community come together for a great cause. The “Celebrate Heroes” 5k was a huge success thanks to the Village of Maryville, sponsors, Jan Hunter, Karen Bell, their committee, and, of course, everyone who participated.  Thank you for celebrating the heroes who have beaten childhood cancer, supporting the heroes who are still fighting and remembering those who have lost their battle.

30 Schools Sock it to Cancer

Pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters filled over 6,000 gold socks this year for the Kellsie’s Hope “Sock it to Cancer” campaign. Kids at more than 30 schools from New York, New Jersey, Florida, Missouri, and Illinois helped “Sock it to Cancer” by filling decorated socks with change they collected. Socks were delivered to the schools and kids showed their amazing creativity as they decorated them in their own unique way.  Kellsies Hope displayed some of the decorated socks at the Trees of Hope Gala on November 18th where everyone was able to appreciate their creativity.  Whether it was a few coins or a whole sock full, it all contributed to the $125,000.00 check that was presented to Dr. Todd Druley from Washington University School of Medicine for Childhood Cancer Research.

Thank you for helping Kellsie’s Hope “Sock it to Cancer”.  The next “Sock it to Cancer” Campaign will start in January,2018 and run until November 1st. Please contact Gail Marchbanks at gail@kellsieshope.com for more information on how your school can participate.

Remember, There's No Place Like Hope!

Bad to the Bone Chili Cook Off

Two families that have felt challenges and losses due to childhood cancer joined forces to make the 2017 Bad to the Bone Chili Cook Off a huge success!  Dawn Merkel, who organizes the Bad to the Bone Chili Cook off in memory of her son Sam, was joined by the Rives family this year who lost their son, Collin, in January, 2017.  Both Sam and Collin had the same cancer as Kellsie, Osteosarcoma.  The Chili Cook Off raised $30,000.00, which was donated to Washington University School of Medicine for Osteosarcoma Research.  Everyone enjoyed live music, raffles, silent auction and, of course, tasting 12 different types of chili and voting on their favorite.  This year’s winner was Josh Brown’s Brisket Chili.  In addition to chili, “Cookies for Collin” were available for purchase and $500.00 was raised and also donated to Washington University School of Medicine for Osteosarcoma Research.

The 2017 Bad to the Bone Chili Cook Off was sponsored by Victory Men's Health. Due to the huge attendance and growing size of this event we are changing locations.  Mark your calendars, the 2018 Bad to the Bone Chili Cook Off will be held at the Edwardsville, Illinois Moose Hall on October 12, 2018.

A big thank you to our generous donors and sponsors who help make this event a huge success!
